3.0 engine chirping sound

02 Ranger 3.0 w /82000 miles.there is a chirping sound coming from on top of the engine at idle.Sounds like its coming from somewhere ontop next to the plenum on the passengers side. The sound progresses as the RPMs increase.Anyone have any idea what this could be .Thanks

Thats crazy, I have an 02 3.0L and I just hit 82000 mi as well. I have other problems with the oil pressure, but im sure its just that some sensors need to be changed out. Thats my project this weekend. Regarding the chirping sound, I'll listen in my truck as well and see if it is common. I'll let you know what I get.

if its still there with the belt off, you probably have a bad cam sensor/synchronizer assembly. If you replace it yourself, be aware that timig it properly is important.

Ditto. Just make sure you get a quality unit. Everyone on other sites recommended Napa's at about $55. Had it in a week and started getting codes. The unit I got was bad, but it took $200 to figure out it wasn't the sensor on top but the sycrohronizer itself. Replaced it with a new Ford unit at $142 and no problems since.

Yeah its definetely the cam sensor/synchronizer assembly. My extended warranty is gonna cover it all with no deductable.Im gonna make sure they use quality parts. Thanks for all your help.

I take that back. The warranty company lied to me when I called. My mechanic said they wont cover it and they charge 275.00.I went to Autozone and ordered one for 50 bucks. It should be fun installing this without throwing the timing off

Go to this forum on another site. About 4 posts down LASH gives links to the install procedures. The second one is the best way to do it for accurate timing.

what can WE do about this cam synro problem? - Page 5 - Ranger Power Sports Forum

Sorry to the moderators for using another site posting info, but the cam synchro is a real problem.

Mission accomplished.Pulled out the old one and marked it.Slid the other one back in.Runs fine. Thanks again for your input.

Trucker_Eric 05-31-2009 08:12 AM

Trucker_Eric 06-02-2009 07:46 AM

ok, thank you. i was just wondering since i didnt read the posts, all of them at least.

bluerangerftlaud 06-18-2009 07:18 AM

after I installed the new one the truck ran fine.I marked the old one and Im pretty sure the timing should be fine. But now the CEL is on with code P1336 with means bad cam sensor or ECM.Im wondering if I installed the new sensor and it was off timing is this the end result or should the truck have ran bad and the CEL should have went on after the install if my timing was off?

rwenzing 06-18-2009 07:36 AM

It is probably because you opted for the cheap AZ sensor/synchronizer. Lots of owners have this problem with the aftermarket Chinese units. I would get the real Ford parts as suggested in post 4 of this thread.

yup 54 bucks, I guess I get what I pay for. I disconnected the battery and reset my codes and the light hasnt come back on...............yet:p
