I use Nikon Capture NX2 for fast adjustments. I have CS3 for the more exciting editing but I'm no expert at it.

I like B&W also and have done lots of it back in the day.
A suggetion: Go to the library and check out any of the many books by Ansel Adams. He was a fantastic B&W photographer!

Do you shoot raw only or raw + jpeg?

Most of what I have shot lately has been jpeg

I always shot RAW. you get the most out of the camera and software that way. even if all you do is minor adjustments then convert to JPEG. I even convert to B&W in RAW before going JPEG.

I shoot in RAW also as it gives me more control over the processing. If you are shooting in JPEG then the camera is doing the processing.

Only issue I have with shooting raw is it forces you to edit every photo.


Is Nikon NX2 the software that comes with the camera when you buy it? Or is that something different?

Personally I rather edit every photo myself instead of letting the camera do it with JPEG shooting. As you may know shooting in RAW gives you a digital negative to work with.

I've had my D300 camera a couple of years now but they used to include a free copy of Nikon Capture on CD when you purchased your camera. When I purchsaed my camera NX2 was in short supply as demand was high. I got a NX1 CD with my camera. I don't know if they include NX2 with new camers now or not. NX2 is way better than NX1 although I never used NX1.

Never have tried shooting in RAW. I am going out today after a buddy gets off work. I may try it with both RAW and JPEG.
