It's called bracketing on my camera which has settings for 3,5,7 and 9 shots.

I'd like that better without the halo look along the horizon.

I need to try this. I upgraded to the D90 for the bracketing feature to do HDR shots. Just never got arround to doing it yet.

^^ Do it, David ! It's really worth the effort ! The amount of detail you can capture is off the charts

I want to do this, but im a beginner at it. 1. do you have to shoot in RAW? 2. what kind of exposure settings? 3. do i need a fancy photoshop program, or can i do it with a free program?

1- No. I prefer to shoot raw for the freedom it allows, but you can shoot Jpeg if you prefer.

2- I find the easiest is to shoot in aperture priority, and if your camera dosen't have 'bracketing', you can just use exposure compensation (usually a +/- sign), and shoot 1 at 0, one overexposed by 1, one underexposed by 1, etc. you can make do with as little as 2 shots, but the more you have, the greater dynamic range you'll have. I usually bracket 5 shots. Note that you should use a tripod for this, your images need to be framed exactly the same.

3- free software does exist, or at least free versions of them. Photomatix isn't that expensive and it's really easy to use, as opposed to photochop that costs hundreds and is not really beginner-friendly.
