I agree with the above posters. The photos are dark and they aren't sharp. They don't have that 'pop' that makes you say "Thats a great photo".
The XS is definitely not a pro grade camera, and the 18-55 kit lens sure isn't the best. Check out Canon's 50mm f/1.8 II Lens. Its got a plastic housing and its cheap. $99 will buy it and it'll be the sharpest lens you'll find until you can afford L glass. It will be a great starting lens for portraits.
