i have no idea which way you should have em but i did read that you should always have a lens hood on though

David has it right. Widest parts of the hood at the top & bottom; if you position it with the widest parts of the hood on the left & right, you'll start seeing it intrude on the sides of your pictures, especially on wide angle shots.

that's the point. a true guru wouldn't need to claim it.

Myke, your body of work stands on its own merit -- look at how you've progressed in the art over the past several months. Testament to that, browse through your "past winners" post in the contest forum and note how many of them are your photos.

You're doing just fine, asking questions when you need to, and doing plenty of self-study and experimentation. You don't become a great photographer by reading or talking about photography; you become a great photographer by taking photographs. lots of 'em. some of which will be great. (that ratio will improve as your talents grow)
