Yeah unforunately no matter how hard we try, it is a phenomenon that there is no reliable and productive way to predict. Nexread can trigger alarms at the NWS indicating rotation that may or may not be or become a tonado. It usually does not become a tornado. The only reliable way to say "there's a tornado" is someone with eyes on it reporting it to the NWS. They will sometimes issue a tornado warning based soley on radar indicated conditions, but it is a double edged sword. Issuing a bunch of tornado warnings when there isn't actually a tornado makes people start ignoring them and is counter-productive.

Was there no actual NWS tornado warning issued, or just no local notfication (sirens, etc).?

Where abouts do you live in Canada?

I've seen a few random tornadoes this year, pretty cool to see but scary when it's coming towards you.

I just noticed you're in Canada so I have no idea how the systems work up there. I would assume it is similar to here in the US.

One other point, you say they sounded the alarm about 20 miles away. To be honest the tornado in that picture looks to be at least 10 to 15 miles away if not more. It is possible your town didn't get a warning because the tornado wasn't a threat to your town.

Oh decent.

Looks pretty scary, know if it caused alot of damage? Doesn't look to be too big.

Alot of the crops are drowned out. First time in 40 years my grandpa's crops have not been seeded because of rain (that's by the Manitoba border). The rain is absolutely ridiculous here.

Can you tell me where that picture was taken and the direction it is facing? I can find out all these answers if I know where it is.
