Default 6.9 IDI in an '85?

Hey, I was wondering if I could put a 6.9 IDI diesel in an '85 ranger. Would it fit well or would I have a terrible time getting it to fit?

That would require a lot of custom work. Electrical, entire driveline, mounts, might have to cut some firewall, all new suspension because stock suspension can't handle that weight, engine and trans mounts, just a lot of stuff. Best way to know would be to get measurements of the engine and trans and measure out your engine bay and see how the trans would mock up as well. But a new driveshaft would need to be made and I would assume some kind of custom rear end.

Well thanks for the advice. Sounds like too much work for what I was looking for. I don't know that much about the 6.9 IDI and I didn't realize it was that large. Oh well...

It's not even the fact of how large. It's just the fact of placement if hoses and filters and such. How high would it rest in the engine bay. And I would always look for where the trans would mount because of possible problems with firewall clearance. because of differences in sizes of motor and trans from your stock motor. But hey I have seen some crazy builds. Got a buddy puttin a zr1 into a 85 m3 so anything is possible if your willing to do it.

Would be a awesome build if you went with it.

great answer though i dont agree with a point or two..

just for those that use the search function and always dead ending on diesel swaps...ease of install would depend on suspension style and whether or not a guy had some reason to not use a body lift at least 1.5 but preferably 3 in..

a stock 6.9 or standard banks 6.9 ,,,hell a 12 valve for that matter wouldnt kill a ranger unless you were getting stupid off road with it. 500-600 pounds is not that much weight for 4x4 trucks running 35 in tires...though a small 2wd would be crazy.

wouldn't necessarily require all new suspension....some stouter springs for sure.

but they are fat bastards. fitting will be more difficult then a 302...but will require all the same types of mods. i run the 6.5, but it is smaller...about the size of a big block....where a 7.3 is about the size of a bloated big block.

there are no wiring or fuel issues with the mech idi diesel either for the powertrain itself in the 85. very cheap to own and maintain and run on a ridiculous range of fuels.
