But a new driveshaft would need to be made and I would assume some kind of custom rear end.

great answer though i dont agree with a point or two..
just for those that use the search function and always dead ending on diesel swaps...ease of install would depend on suspension style and whether or not a guy had some reason to not use a body lift at least 1.5 but preferably 3 in..
a stock 6.9 or standard banks 6.9 ,,,hell a 12 valve for that matter wouldnt kill a ranger unless you were getting stupid off road with it. 500-600 pounds is not that much weight for 4x4 trucks running 35 in tires...though a small 2wd would be crazy.
wouldn't necessarily require all new suspension....some stouter springs for sure.
but they are fat bastards. fitting will be more difficult then a 302...but will require all the same types of mods. i run the 6.5, but it is smaller...about the size of a big block....where a 7.3 is about the size of a bloated big block.
there are no wiring or fuel issues with the mech idi diesel either for the powertrain itself in the 85. very cheap to own and maintain and run on a ridiculous range of fuels.
