Still have a chirp/screech...
Changed the cam synchronizer (although i think i put it in just 1 gear left of where it oughta be, I already have a big difference in MPG...i will be going back into it this weekend)
But i still have a screech on startup. It lasts like 2-3 seconds and sometimes (not all the time) it will screech through like all of first gear when the engine is cold. If the engine is warm it is usually just the screech on startup.
Also, if i am flooring it (like trying to pass somebody on the highway/dotted line) if screeches for a couple seconds as well.
Sometimes I can hear it faintly chirping away while I'm driving around at like 45 MPH...
So, like i said...replaced the cam synchronizer. I would replace the belt but i feel like a belt wouldnt be that moody.
Figuring on it being a pulley needing to be replaced...anybody have an idea?
Also, since my cam sync is just a hair off, will it do any damage if i don't get to it immediately?? I drove it for about a total of 2 hours of highway since closing the hood.

Re: Still have a chirp/screech...
The cam sync doesn't stop chirping. Ever. It only gets worse over time.
If I were you, just to be sure you get it right, put the engine at TDC, and then pull off the cam position sensor. If the little tooth isn't in the open section of the wall, pull out the cam sync and re-align it until it is.

Re: Still have a chirp/screech...
I just put in a NEW cam sync...so thats why I'm pretty sure the chirp isn't the cam synchronizer...if the cam sync ALWAYS chirped no matter how new it was, I don't think anyone would buy vehicles with it in them...but I will check again.
When I took the old one out, the tooth was SLIGHTY off center of the gap to the right (it was fully within the gap, just slightly off center). Should I put it back the same way? Or should I have centered it??

I'll quote myself....its impossible for my synchronizer to be dead center...I tried like 4 combinations tonight trying to adjust it and they all made it rougher so I put it back in its original position as when I started today. But my sync cant be dead center...the closest tooth is slightly to the right inside of the gap.

That's not what I meant. The old cam sync should have always chirped. It wouldn't have picked and chose when it chirped. The belt and pulleys will, depending on whether or not they're dry. All it takes is a little misty rain for moisture to get in between the cracks of a belt and make it chirp. Moisture on the pulleys will flick water into the belt, and the belt will chirp.
As for your cam sync, it's good to replace it anyway, since it's a matter of when, not if it will fail. As for how you put in, you're supposed to center it. My truck was slightly off as well, but I can't remember if I was able to get the new one centered. The drive gears are spiral cut, so it's hard to get it centered no matter what.

Re: Still have a chirp/screech...
Ah i see what you meant.
Well, it chirps OR squeaks every single time i start up...the moody part is how long it chirps and if it chirps during the first 2000 RPM of the drive.
P.S. it is NOT weather related.

and as far as your signature goes...they definitely didnt idiot-proof these engines!

Re: Still have a chirp/screech...
Even a dry crack can still cause issues. Have you pulled the belt and turned it inside out, and bent it backwards to check for cracks?
When you have the belt off, turn each pulley by hand as quick as you can. Feel for any kind of rough spots or any chirping sounds. The tensioner pulley is one of the biggest culprits on Rangers, but I've heard cases of all the others giving issues as well.

Try checking the ac I replaced mine because it made a horrible screeching noise when it got below 40 degrees and only got worse over time
