Ima little late to the party. If you want a Ford i would recomend a 7.3 (both idi and powerstroke) it was a very stout motor that could handle high load applications, they are also gread for any sort of power additions (ie. propane, nos, etc.) but the 7.3`s where not very mpg friendly (15-18 is the norm for a 7.3). The 6.0 hade problems blowing head gaskets due to too much boost pressure, they also have problems with the trubo pedistal (leaks oil into your intake causing a "runaway") both of these tend to show up from 125k-185k (miles) other than that the 6.0 is one of the quickest diesels that Ford ever made (stock). I would even reccomend the older 6.9 idi, very compareable to the 7.3 just a litter smaller. If you want to go with a different brand like a Dodge the only two 5.9`s that i would reccomend is the first gen. (Ie 89?-93) and the 24v instead of the usual 12v. Both the first gen, and the 24v 5.9`s get decent economy, can support many modifications, and can still haul heavy loads. The newest 6.7? Is also a very good engine but these are newer trucks so the will be expensive. Now if you wanted to go with a GM diesel, im sorry, but i would stay with a newer one. The older mechanical 6.2 and then later 6.5 where both decent engines if you dident want to haul huge loads, granted they do get fairly decent economy but they dont handle modifications too well. The newer 6.6 (I think is the new duramax size) is a lot more powerful, less economical, but quicker than its predocessors. So if you want power for towing: 7.3, or either cummins. Fuel economy: 6.0 (after head gasket and turbo upgrades),6.2, or 6.5. Speed(well...quickness, because we are talking about trucks here..) than either Ford, Dodge, or the most recent GM mentioned above.

International made all power strikes up till the 6.7.

Plus, the 6.0 would over boost due to the variable veins gettin stuck shut due to too much soot being pumped through the turbos. That didn't allow them to open up causing too much boost at higher rpms.
