Talking A different kind of 5.0 swap

Ford 5.0 V8's have been done a lot. Since inheriting my dads old 93 Ranger I've been reading up on engine swaps. Being that I've never owned a Ford, there's a LOT of info to learn.

While it'll take an immense amount of planning, I'm sold on my different type of 5.0 swap. I've only found a couple old threads online about it, but I will over the next how many years it takes me, hopefully be the first to swap in a BMW M70 5.0 V12 to a 1993 Ford Ranger

The plus sides to this are:
  • I know the BMW engine mechanics and wiring really well, having owned and done all the mechanical and electrical work on my own 1989 750il that had the 5.0 V12.
  • The mechanics of the engine, and electrical aspects will be my least challenging portion of this major project.
  • I will re-use the stock Bosch Motronic fuel injection computers, including the drive-by-wire throttle bodies (yes, there are two throttle bodies - one for each bank of 6 cylinders)

Fitment of the engine shouldn't be a HUGE challenge as the 5.0 is only a touch wider at the valve covers than a 302, and is actually lighter since it's an aluminum engine. I plan to delete the AC system. I will also run a bed mounted radiator as the M70 engine has a plenty beefy water pump to circulate a lot of coolant. This will leave some extra room in the front for the engine accessories. The stock exhaust manifolds of the M70 really hug the engine as it was pretty crammed into the BMW body, so I don't anticipate major issues there

The fitment challenges I do see are:
  • The alternator being mounted toward the bottom of the M70 could interfere with the Ford Steering box.
  • The auto trans from the 750il is pretty large - but I won't be opposed to making the trans tunnel a bit larger since there is plenty of room on the cab floor
  • Custom cross member to support the large auto-trans
  • Not sure yet what I'll run for a rear end
  • Custom Driveshaft (converted to 2 wheel drive)

As I plan, I anticipate many more challenges, but I'm glad I'm comfortable with the electrical and mechanical portion of the M70. The end result should be a 93 Ford Ranger with a BMW M70 V12 with 300hp.

Now, onto finding a donor 750il with decent mileage!

This sounds like a really interesting engine swap!! A Ranger with a V12! It will likely be the only one in captivity.

Regeared to 3.73's, Ultra 15x7 rims, 235/70/15 Yokohama Geolandar AT/S tires.
Mods: plastidipped grill and header panel, Throttle cable mod, aftermarket projector headlight and corners, Alpine CDA-105 Headunit, 2 MTX TS82 8" subs in trick boxes, strobe lights on front of truck. K&N drop in filter, 2.5" exhaust after catalytic converter to a Thrush Welded muffler, pipe exits at stock location.
