Default 6BT 5.9 Cummins swap, What transmission should I use?

I am planning on buying a Ranger to throw a 5.9L Cummins turbo diesel in and I would like to go with an Allison 6-speed automatic. But a buddy of mine said it would be too big. Now would I get it to fit without to terribly much trouble or should I go with something else?

What transmission would you guys recommend?

If it helps I will be lifting the pickup 3 inches and throwing bigger tires on as well. Could I build it so the engine and tranny sit lower in the pickup and make it work?

a 4bt would be best. the 6bt is a really long engine, also it weighs ALOT more than your stock engine. to make it fit would probably require either stretching the front or cutting the firewall in alot. Swapping a 6bt into a dodge dakota is even difficult, and it's bigger than the ranger. a 4bt would weigh less, cost less to swap, and have plenty of power/weight ratio.

6bt is way to big, 4bt would be what you want.

engine, transmission and adapter plate are $3500

transmission to go with ZF or M5R2 out of an f150 with a v8

The 12v 5.9 will fit with about 1" clearance with use of an electrical fan and deleting the mechanical
And it would be easiest to strio the front end and slide the motor/trans in as one

Im quagmire I f*ck hoes, my cash flow Im gigiddygetting it

Ive seen somebody put a 5.9 12 valve in a ranger, he had to elongate the hood, and i dont even think it ran, i think he just put the engine in and did nothing else, because it had no other components under the hood.

Oh its been done! But yeah after talking to some buddies today I'm starting to think about just going with the 4BT All depends. I'm going to buy the Ranger, work on the suspension get rims and tires and get it looking nice first. (No I'm not going to make it look like a mexi-rig. And such which will probably take me a couple years before I'm done with all that. And then I'll decide on weather I want to go with the 4BT or the 6BT when the time comes. All depends on how I'm sitting financially.

Ive seen that one on you tube. He had to do ALOT of modifications to the engine bay to get it to work. It would be alot cheaper and easier to do a 4bt. the 4bt is way more powerfull then the 4.0 sohc that comes in 01+ rangers, and ive even heard of the 4bt's in rangers getting upwards of 30mpg.

But does the cost of putten in the 4bt offset?

I know alot of LAnd Rover guys that put 6.2s and 6.5s in there Land Rovers. They get about 25 or so. Seen a few of them put in a International 4 cyl. in them as well.

I used to work for our local Cummins distributor, They didn't put 6BT's in 1/2 ton pickups because the frames can't take the weight, a 6BT weighs over 1,000lb. Plus they don't fit without crazy mods and you'll have to seriously reinforce the frame or it will bend. An Allison won't fit without major mods either, though probably better with a 4BT. A stock 4BT can have up to 130hp and I believe 400 Ft/lb torque. Keep in mind also, 4BT's aren't normally balanced so unless you add that feature or it happened to come with one, it will vibrate and possibly enough to crack fuel lines over time, so keep an eye on that. Also, NEVER, EVER put the longer oil filter from a 6BT on a 4BT. They use the short one because the filter mount on a 4BT vibrates and the longer filter will eventually crack the mount. They are good little engines but there are a few things to consider to do it right. We had a guy work for us who developed swap kits, and had put one in a Jeep CJ5 and it was NASTY powerful, like a Ranger, they don't weigh much. They should also be economical too if you don't go too crazy with tall tires. It will definitely require an Allison or a stout pickup trans to handle that torque.

You would have a lot of fun trying to get the Allison in there too. To say the least, its bigger than the stock trans by a lot

Sooooo... if I wanted to put a 4bt in my truck, I would have to buy the motor itself (obviously) and a transmission and a transfer case and a new rear end and make front suspension modifications?

thats alot of money!
