Re: What engines fit
4.0L Ford V6 should fit no problem, but if your gonna do an engine swap why not go for a V8!

Re: What engines fit
The V8 is too much of a gas guzzler. There are a bunch of 4.0's that i could do but I want to know which one is gonna be the easiest. Also which transmissions are compatible?

Re: What engines fit
4.0 will not get much better MPG than a 5.0.. want to save gas? keep what you have

Re: What engines fit
I still would like more towing power than I have with the 2.3. I know that the gas mileage isn't much different but every penny helps in these times. I figured out which engine i would like but idk which trans to put with it. I will put the engine up later I have to head to work now.
Thanks everyone

Re: What engines fit
A V8 wouldnt work as hard to get around or use for towing. And im talking a small V8 like the 5.0L. If you are going to do and engine swap, do the V8, but if you are really worried about gas then keep what you have or get a geo metro!

A Geo would double as my coffin.
Thanks, that low end 5.0 sounds good. besides I think Im going to make my truck use CNG so gas shouldn't be a factor either way.

Re: What engines fit
My mother's F-150 crew cab with a 5.4 Modular V8 gets around 15 mpg, so sticking a Ford 302 (or 5.0L depending on if you like liters or cubic inches) in a truck thats almost half that weight wouldn't require much to get it going. I'm not sure if you have an auto or a manual, but as far as manuals go you could keep the standard M5OD-R1, however I would try to find an M5OD-R2 from a 92-97 F15o, just because it was used with that size of engine whereas the R1 wasn't.

Re: What engines fit
I've rode in a carbed V8 ranger before and it was awesome. The cat that took me for a ride got exactly the same mpgs that he did with his 4.0 and that was with a carbed motor. Basicly what everyone is saying the 5.0 V8 in a ranger aint as bad on gasoline as most people say it is. The 5.0 will not need to use as much power to move the truck around and in fact use less gas than what people think because you changed how much weight the V8 pushed compared to what it pushes when the swap is completed. If you're concerned about mpgs that much, I have to agree with everyone else, Keep what you have or see if you can find someone willing to part from their Geo Metro.

...and a 3.0 doesn't get that much better mileage than a 4.0, so does that mean a 3.0 and 5.0 get about the same gas mileage? LOL

No not exactly. What I'm saying is that some of todays V8 engines are alot more fuel friendly than what they were. Plus if you take that same 3.0 or 4.0 engine and place it in a vehicle that is about 2,000 lbs lighter, it will do 10 times better in terms of fuel economy than it ever did. That's basicly what everyone is saying. That 5.0 swap from an F150/ 1999-2001 Ford explorer going into a Ranger that originally had a 4 banger in it, is roughly about 1/2 of the weight it's used to be moving around. So that means alot less power is needed to move the ranger around and since it is pushing less weight, alot better fuel economy than what it normally would get. That's the ultimate fuel economy secret: WEIGHT REDUCTION.

So if I strap a 302 into a go-kart... This requires further thought and research! It's time to do science!

Holy shit dude you trying to rip something in half, L.O.L. I would do some science and research. Car Science done a test not long ago. They took a Nissian Altima and started drag racing it. After a couple of runs, they stripped the car of everything they could. It looked like a rolling platform basicly. The results were that they gained over 1.5 seconds on each run. Total weight stripped out of it, 1500 plus lbs removed. They cut the car in half from the bottom up. It had no top or nothing. It looked funny with just a rolling frame and firewall and 2 seats.

Re: What engines fit
I rode in a T-bucket today that had a 4.0 SOHC Ford Ranger motor in it. That thing was awesome! you talk about something that will fly jesus. And we rode for about 100 miles before the fuel needle even budged. I wish my camera wasn't dead I would've posted photos up in here for sure. The dude recently contacted and insurance company and bought a repairable ford ranger. The insurance company said it would cost too much for them to repair it but he used it to build a T-Bucket instead. Now I know where to look for parts.
