ECU swap?
soo...reading on a web page about the possibilty of changing out a Ford Ranger ECU with a "perfectly matched" ford mustang ECU. It has to be the same engine size, same year, and same transmission and somehow you gain 5 hp and 20lbs of torque...seemes a little sketch, anybody tried this or even heard of it?

Re: ECU swap?
NOPE. THe only way you'll get away with a direct replacement is to swap in an exact match with the same part number - prefix and all - from a junked Ranger. Otherwise you'll have to purchase a new one and get it flashed.

I have to agree. Changing a ECU in a ranger with a new mustang ECU is possible yes, but usually when someone is doing that they're doing an engine swap. Basicly you have to go to a dealer for that part. There's no aftermarket support concerning this item at all.

Exactly. Some blogs promote this crap as well as other websites and few people that claim they can do this, are usually desperate for tuning jobs. Ricers swear up and down this can be done, but we've all seen some of their mods/work on vehicles.

Re: ECU swap?
From a page titled 2.3 Mods? Currently on Hotrodhigh? I've seen it explained, and I don't see where there would be a problem with it.
CONSIDERING all the criteria is met.
Same year.
Same engine.
Same transmission.
It only makes sense for Ford (and others) to use one harness across similar engine combos.
I say pull one of each, compare next to each other, look for any immediate differences, then look for differences in ID code.
.................................
After my VA check up tomorrow, I may go do this for my own knowledge.

Kool, please let us know how it turns out. Cause some engines might use the same ECU and harness, but the programming might be different. The ignition timing might be different too. But still would be some good info for future referance though.

Re: ECU swap?
The page I've read mentions the programming for the Mustang, I don't think Ford would have been moving any Mustangs if they moved the same as a Ranger...

Re: ECU swap?
actuly this is a simple swap it plugs right up it changes fuel maps and timeing. its very simple if you think about it when you chip an ecu your really just doing the same thing just not to the same extent. my oppinon is that its completely safe it does not have to be anything exept for the same motor and match the tranny [manual/auto].
i have a 1992 2.3 with a swaped ecu polished heads and a wieght reduction.havent hit the dyno yet i plan on putting a t3 t4 turbo on about 8 pounds before we see what she does.
things that dont help hp on my truck is
3 inch belltech drop.
bucket seats.
short thow shifter.
k&n intake.
craiger 14 inch rally wheels.

Re: ECU swap?
Ok cool were at
the reason this is plug and play is because a 2.3 or for you big boys 5.0 you can swap the ecu does have to be same motor tranny just has to match as far as manual or auto. Every company uses the same wiring harness on a specific motor with like the 2.3 is in mustangs t birds pinto"s rangers and so on the ecu is just programed diffrent.
So once my truck is boosted I will use a t bird ecu from the turbo model getting rid of the tunning proses.
