Well last week I put a tune on my ranger4.0 4x4 for MPGS with a K&N CAI and a mangna flow single I use to get 16 or so on the hwy now I get 21.5! I think that is worth the 475.22 I paid and gas keeps going up so yeah I'l make my money back .

I don't think a 5mpg increase is what anyone should expect as typical. Do you really baby it when you drive? I also don't think that intake has ANYTHING to do with it at all. So really do the tuner if you want but don't waste your money on the intake. You can use that $200 something dollars for something more useful like gas, food, or porn.

I drove my truck off the lot new.
Back when I had a stock exaust,..5th gear @ 50 mph, the truck on level ground just couldnt do it. It was that simple.
The I added a magnaflow. 5th gear @ 50 mph, on level ground the truck will hold the speed or go faster if I like.

I did my exaust at 80,000 miles, I now have 120,000. I remember very well my ol stock exaust, I had to be in 4th gear at 55mph, not anymore!

Did I gain any MPG??? Nope. If anything I felt I might of lost 0.5-1MPG replaceing my exaust..

Air box mod and K&N did nothing for me. But I don't feel they hurt anything lol.

you couldnt have lost mpg or power if your truck runs easier at speed. If your truck can't hold 55 mph in 5th, then it certainly isn't getting good mpg. The easier it is for the car to move the better the mpg; which is why some trucks with more powerful v8s can get the same or better mileage as their v6 counterpart.

You could try a performance chip from SLR motorsports. I put one on my last truck (nissan frontier 4.0 ) and it defintly boosted the hp, this truck was a rocket! got about 1 more mpg. I don't know how it will affect a ranger.

I completely agree with Fire Ranger when Ford builds the truck they try to get you the most MPG possible, so an intake mod... won't do anything to help MPG. Best thing for your intake is keep it clean an in good shape like everything else.

I agree with fireranger because you computer controls everything on your truck. i work at a dealership and i know a lot about vehicles. And i have been told and i believe them 100% that without changing your computer with a programmer everything you do will be ignored in your vehicle.

Engineers are not always trying for peak performance that we would want. They have a set of goals they try to meet no matter what they could do and will not necessarily go beyond that. Most of the time there is quite a bit of wiggle room in there engineering b/c they do not like to be wrong and don't usually push the envelope. This is just an observation I have made while working with Marine engineers in the boating industry for the last 18 years. I do not think they will ever reveal everything they could do because the Automotive industry has their greedy little fingers in a whole lot of other industries that make them money. Especially the after market stuff. Just my 2 cents.

I don't know about anyone else, but when I installed my K&N 77 series intake along with a Flowmaster catback it was night and day. Throttle response is unreal after the intake, plus when I used to put it to the floor it would only goto 4000 rpm, now it goes up to 5700. I have also seen an increase from about 16 mpg combined to about 19 mpg, hopeful for more when I put more stuff on. The intake also makes the flowmaster rumble just a tad more. The truck runs like a scalded dog now. In the end its all about budget vs gains.

BTW, I have kept track of every penny Ive spent on this truck using the aCar app for android phones. I can see what my gas mileage is for EVERY fill up I've ever done, as I always top it off.

Now a cold air intake would not cause that to happen, that seems like you pressed the throttle a little harder.
