Default engine swap

So my ranger engine has about 181000 miles on it and i was thinking on swaping it out for a 1992 engine with only 22 miles on it. my question/problem is, would a 92 engine thats not a 4x4 fit up with a 4x4 tranny, driveshaft?

What do you have now? What are you wanting to swap in?

i basically wanted to take a 2.9l v6 and do an overhaul on it. wanted to beef up my 88 ranger enough to do some off roading and able to roll my 33x12.5 tires. because i heard that a stock 2.9 dosent have enough power to roll it up to 5th gear. HELP ME!

Yeah - the engine will go in just fine.

2.9L overhaul isn't going to be really worth the money; and in most cases with tire size increases you need to re-gear both the rear and front diffs to make up for the difference. '92 was a year w/ 4.0L - if I were thinking about pulling a 2.9L, I would be looking for a '92 Ranger wiring harness for a 4.0L and looking to swap that in. The swap cost would be comparable to a engine rebuild and you would end up with a better result, but it will not be as strait forward (but worth the effort). 4.0L will work with your current M5OD-R1 (gearing is a little different tho) and sit right in place of the 2.9L.

sweet. so i can take my 2.9l engine and hook up a 4.0l wiring harness and that would give me some good results. what about axles? cause i dont think the stock axles would be sufficient enough.

Ah - what I meant is also installing a 4.0L engine and getting rid of the 2.9L . It's been out of production for a long time, really not worth while to rebuild. Heads are not great and better heads are expensive. Poor oiling system. Aftermarket is slim and extremely costly. I built a 2.9L with a mid/high performance cam (I don't offroad, but nice to go street since I live in the middle of the city), ended up trading everything I had for my 2.9L for a spare 5L and AOD for my truck that I swapped in.

5.0l has been around in almost every big car sports car and 1/2ton truck since the 60's and the easiest thing for a swap is out of an Explorer
