This is kind of an old post now, I read it a day or so after it was posted and figured a lot of people would jump on it.
You ask about a Benz diesel, I don't know if it will fit, we will need to have some dimensions, length, height and width if it is a V6, I4 just the length and height.
A lot of things depend on how much of the Benz you are planning on using, engine/trans or build an adapter to bolt the Ranger trans to the Benz.
Personally, I would be very interested in getting a diesel with some real HP/torque into a RBV of some sort.

also you might wanna check the axle setups, i know my roommates audi is front wheel drive, and they just released the diesel version of it so you have to make sure the engine is rear wheel drive. and that the drive shaft comes out roughly at the center to go to the axle. some of the earlier diesel benzs utilize full independent suspension for a smoother ride, so that could be an issue. best bet would be find a diesel out of a compact truck, there are some out there, and that would be easiest to do. a member of RPS was going to put in a diesel but decided not to. he researched everything up though and had all the stuff, cost was just too high

I'm pretty sure the Benz diesel has been swapped in before.

ya it might have been bmw with the independent suspension, either way, make sure the drive shaft will come out in the right general area or youll have to make some custom axles

if you're gonna put a diesel motor just go for the gold and put a 4bt cummins in but if ya did that, you'd have to re-do the ENTIRE drivetrain... tranny, t-case, front axle, suspension(the motor is about double the weight of a 4.0L), rearend, driveline, fuel system... basically everything you can think of haha. but hey if ya do end up putting a diesel in, i wanna see it!

only problem with the 5.9(6bt) is that it is so long that you've gotta extend the frame out, and chew into the firewall pretty bad to get it to fit. the 3.9L(4bt) has been put in with a lot less trouble, but still hauls! especially in a light truck like the ranger, and the motor upgrades for a 5.9 are pretty much interchangeable with the 3.9L cause its the same as the 5.9L with just 2 cylinders cut off.

yes i agree the 4BT motor is a great motor. Either motor would be great to use, just one needs a little more work to fit. Either way its still badass

Why not look at an Isuzu diesel? My friend Tom has one in his Samurai. All he has is 1, yes 1 wire to run. Thats for fuel delivery. And thats it. Nice thing about a mechanical diesel motor, is that it will run without any need for a battery.

No external dimensions yet, but the link is for a Isuzu 4H inline 4. EPA friendly and has some pretty good power.
