Default Cummins R 2.8 Diesel

Cummins has a "Cummins Repower" program that specifically markets to off roaders and others that have older vehicles, perhaps extensively modified, who need or want a new power plant.

Cummins is now starting to ship the Cummins R 2.8 Diesel Turbo specifically made for this market. I have a 1998 4WD 3.0 with 185xxx mi. on it running like a top, but I need a plan B when/if it goes. Of interest to me would be the torque gain as I pull a small off road camper trailer and I've made a lot of mods to my truck for extended camping excursions.

At first glance this 500# compact powerplant looks like it would easily fit in a Ranger. Not cheap at MSRP of $9000, but then you get a brand new engine that should last 400,000k or more.

Thoughts? Potential?

I'd sure as heck do it to my 05'. I'd regear to 4.10 and have a torque monster... Would be a great upgrade for mountain driving compared to the 2.3......................

That would be true for most, but for me I've spent a lot of time and money outfitting my Ranger for extended overland travel. Even buying a decent used truck would be the cost of the engine, plus I'd have significant costs and a lot of labor in redoing my outfitting.

Depends on your situation. The Cummins Repower program is geared towards people in my situation who want to keep their present rig but need/want to upgrade the power plant.

I wouldn't consider it until the 3.0 takes a dump (hope to get another 100,000k out of it), and by then I'm pretty certain there will be better deals than $9000 MSRP.

It will be interesting to see what kind of adapters and other parts are manufactured for installs on various vehicles.

Cummins documentaion says the R 2.8 Diesel Turbo has been emissions certified and generally is suitable for 1999 or older vehicles for emissions compliance.

No. Cummins documentation says the R 2.8 is not designed for any specific vehicle/ transmission, etc. and its the responsibility of the owner to determine the suitability for and installation requirements on a specific vehicle.

Maybe I'll move back to OH where literally they asked for the VIN and the make, model and mileage and nobody has to know that I have Cummins in an 05 ranger... 🤷

Sounds like Advance Adapters is working on creating some transmission options:

Yeah, looks like they have a package available for Jeeps. Probably develop one for the Toyota Tacoma and others popular with off roaders. Be interesting to see what is produced for what promises to be a popular replacement powerplant for this niche market.

Obviously would have to be enuf demand from the Ranger market for them (or others) to develop a package for Rangers.
