Default 1997 mountaineer 5.0 to 2002 ranger

I know the 5.0 motor will bolt into my 2002 ranger, but what I'm curious about is if the trans would as well. Also is that would it still pass emissions since it's a little bit of a older motor? This is my DD and can't have it not pass emissions.

I can't remember if the crossmember is the same, but as long as you have the complete Mountaineer then the worst case is using the transmission crossmember that's installed behind the 5.0.

A '99-01 will be a better donor because the PATS system is the same as your 2002 and it's set up for a returnless fuel system.

Not sure on emissions. Technically you're supposed to use an engine that's the same year or newer as your Ranger, but that's rarely enforced. I doubt Pennsylvania would give you an issue there. Do you have emissions tests as part of your inspection?

Sadly I have to have it tested for emissions... it'll still have all the egr and cats from the explorer

Honestly it's probably a non issue. I'd be very surprised if you couldn't get through the test.

So I made some phone calls, asking questions. One of the main answers is that the computer that does the emissions testing checks the vin off the registration AND the computer vin... can the ecu be reflashed to have my vin?

See if you can find some documentation of the test procedure. I couldn't find anything that confirms the ECU reporting the VIN back to the test equipment. Lots of discussion about concerns that it might, but everybody seemed to get through the tests with swapped ECU's in states all over the map, including California. Wish I could give you something more specific.

I just realized something, even if I can make the ecu work, the other problem would be that on the paperwork it’s a v6 truck, but would be putting out v8 emissions....

First off, I'm surprised that you're not exempt from emissions for this vehicle over 10 years old. Here in New York state anything over 10 years is exempt from emissions testing, and just required safety inspections. They just check to make sure that it has a catalytic converter if one is required. I can't tell you how many of those Cadillac converters I've cut open and scooped out the insides of and welded them back together for friends just so they could get more power out of older vehicles of theirs. Second I don't believe the size of the engine has anything to do with what emission standards you have to meet. It has to do with the size of the vehicle/weight and what emissions the engine actually puts out of the exhaust; it has to be within range specs. I believe there's some information on that so you can actually look t up to see what the emissions put out by the donar vehicle are and what's required by the vehicle that you have. I don't know what site would have that information, but I'm sure you can Google it and find it some place and just look up the numbers.
