Default Turbo Failure = Engine damage?

My T6 2013 3.2 Diesel recently cut out with a huge ball of exhaust smoke.
The Ford dealer tells me the turbo has failed and this has damaged the engine. He recommends a new turbo, of course, new engine and new injectors and glo plugs .
The engine stills runs with no funny noises, just allot of exhaust smoke.
Is it necessary to replace everything? Will the engine have suffered any damage?
From what I have read the intercooler would have stopped debris entering the cylinders but could excessive oil from the turbo via the intercooler have damaged anything else?
Regards

Chances are pretty good the engine isn't damaged at all. I've lost a couple turbos, on big trucks, and zero damage to the engine. Of course you get a lot of exhaust smoke, the engine isn't getting the amount of air it needs. You might want to clean out the CAC, mainly to get the oil out of it. BTW, it is normal to have some oil in the CAC, just likely not as much as you might have right now.
Just what happened to the turbo?

Unless you ran it for an extended period of time with a blown turbo, I wouldn't think engine would need to be replaced.

if i heard that from a dealer, i would try to run my own diagnostics to verify that the turbo is actually bad, and not a related electrical sensor. a whole new motor, turbo, injectors set, and glowplugs? something sounds wrong on this... best of luck! don't let them steal your money!

does this engine have egr? verify that you don't have excessive egr flow back into the intake. i had a guy try to tell my that my injectors needed replacement when the egr valve was actually sticking open. it cause similar symptoms like big black clouds and low power

did they say the bearing shred or something? maybe they felt that the turbo put some metal down the oil return back into the crankcase?

I've had impeller bits end up smashing a head up on me. It really depends on how the turbo went.

The intercooler will stop the blade fragments. Most middle to high end diesel turbo setups incorporate an intercooler.

The smoke makes sense, pump is calibrated for boost and there is none.
ALSO if the turbo is locked up and especially if the shaft is bent or broken a lot of oil can escape through the "piston ring" seal under the compressor wheel. Pressure from the cold side usually keeps the oil in the bearing housing at bay, if the shaft isn't spinning there is no pressure.

Man oh Man sounds like the dealer needs to make a mortgage payment.

I would replace the turbo and do as the others have mentioned then run the engine to see if everything clears up.

If your engine is shot running it with a new turbo installed for a few minutes should not make things worse.

I thought this thread was about somebody putting a turbo in a real Ranger.

I blame Ford for not distributing them in the US.

Unless the turbo gernaded itself and sent chunks of metal into the engine, it sounds like the seals in it just went out. You could probably have the turbo rebuilt and put it back on and be fine.

Just replace the turbo unless this happened.
