Default Jeep 4.0L Oil and Filter

I'm going to teach my nephew how to maintain his 2001 Jeep, he's never done it himself he's always paid to have it done.

Anyway best I can tell the engine can use about anything shy of 80W90 gear lube, I was thinking 10w30 synthetic.
As far as Filter I'm not a fan of Fram filters but it almost seems like a Ford Motorcraft Fl 1-a will fit. Any insight?

Do a side by side comparison of the fram and motorcraft. If there are any leaks synthetic can make them worse.

I haven't noticed any leaks. I've been doing some other work to it the past few days. Probably just run standard old 10W30 some brand oil in it.

If its higher mileage, use a grade slightly thicker than specified. if its been given synthetic all its life then i would stay with synthetic. if its been given dino oil definitely do not switch to synthetic. as for oil filter choice, use oem or a GOOD quality a/m. dont use motorcraft even if it fits, as it was not designed for that engine. Fram, is NOT good quality. i cant tell you how much engine carnage ive seen working as a mechanic caused by cheap oil filters, or improper oil grade.

Wal Mart had Bosch filters, I don't like Fram either and they had Mobil 1 Synthetic 5 quart jugs $2 different than standard 10W-30 so he's now running synthetic.
Took about a hour and a half to rotate tires and change the oil but he learned and did it all, I pointed out a few seals we need to work on when we have more time.

should use oil viscosity recommended in manual. as far as i know 10w30 has not been recomended in the past 20 years. start up viscosity is too high and running viscosity is too high. will hurt gas mileage. useing synthetic is related too does your motor burn oil. if it does use dino oil. modern engines of the newest variety use 5w20 for better gas mileage but not for use in a oil burning motor. synthetic can be used in a motor that has previously used dino. out of date info. use 5w30.

That's an old wives tale.

Switching to synthetic oil on a higher mileage engine is not recommended because of this. Same as a trans flush on higher mileage transmissions isn't wise either.

The main reason it is not recommended to switch to a synthetic oil after using a mineral oil for a long time is due to the detergents and additives in the oil. typically synthetic oils have lots of detergents and additives that will actively clean and prevent carbon deposits, mineral oils don't. putting synthetic into a high mileage engine that has always seen mineral oil will cause a lot of the carbon deposits in the crank case to break loose and flow into the oil. if too much of this happens at once it can prematurely clog a filter and cause engine damage due to oil starvation.

What synthetic has is more uniform molecular size, not smaller.

This is what I think is the old wives tale (not tail). Dino oil contains detergents, dispersants and additives as well.

Hmm if synthetics are supposedly bad for a high mileage engine, then why are high mileage oils always a synthetic blend?

That is all dependant on how a vehicles engine has been maintained, if a person doesn't change their oil until 30,000 miles or never does it the next person that may own it and decides to run synthetic may find out its maintenance history in the form of leaks from degraded gaskets after the sludge has been removed and the possible filter clogging that reduces oil pressure killing the bearings. Oil with lots of miles has a lot of hydrocarbons/gas which breaks down gaskets faster.

I don't know about the JEEP, but my 2001 Ranger XLT loves the diesel oil, like one of the post said. I did a lot of research on the Shell Rotella T6 5W-40 full synthetic. All I could find NEGATIVE about it was it MIGHT eventually start clogging my cat convertor. If it does I'll cut it off and throw it away.

Truck came with 5W-30, I kept the 5W for cold starts and up to 40 because here in Central FL it gets pretty hot. I have noticed since using this oil the temp gauge runs lower than it used to. You can run it hard pulling a trailer and will get to the center where it always ran, but if you stop and let it idle for about 5 minutes you can see the gauge go down.

I know some of the newer oils have removed or lessened some of the better compounds in the oils on the account of clogging converters. Racers here are breaking in their high dollar motors on the Shell Rotella because they don't have to go by the Zinc and stuff to do it.

I also researched NAPA oil filters, for thread and gasket, and micron specs and put a NAPA Gold 1087 on mine, holds more oil. And no I don't work for Shell or NAPA, just do my home work...
