All I could find NEGATIVE about it was it MIGHT eventually start clogging my cat convertor. If it does I'll cut it off and throw it away.

Truck came with 5W-30, I kept the 5W for cold starts and up to 40 because here in Central FL it gets pretty hot. I have noticed since using this oil the temp gauge runs lower than it used to. You can run it hard pulling a trailer and will get to the center where it always ran, but if you stop and let it idle for about 5 minutes you can see the gauge go down.

I know some of the newer oils have removed or lessened some of the better compounds in the oils on the account of clogging converters. Racers here are breaking in their high dollar motors on the Shell Rotella because they don't have to go by the Zinc and stuff to do it.

I also researched NAPA oil filters, for thread and gasket, and micron specs and put a NAPA Gold 1087 on mine, holds more oil. And no I don't work for Shell or NAPA, just do my home work...
You do your homework, but you need to explain something. How does anything in your motor oil have anything to with the catalytic converter? Which is on the exhaust system? If you are getting that much oil past the oil ring and burned, you have bigger issues than your cold starts...

I don't think they had in mind that oil itself was getting by the rings to the cats, probably what they were referring to in the articles were the gases that get by the rings, there are some, and over time they claim that is what makes the cat go bad and trip the check engine light. All I know is what I read

I just did this about 900 miles ago, don't have a clue as to what their "it will soon cause the check engine light to trip" time limit was, but I will find out. I logged the mileage and stats, will be posting any adverse effects. But so far I see none.

Smaller molecules????? Now I heard it all.

do some research and learn something. I was corrected earlier and it wasn't so much smaller as they are more uniform. I'm willing to admit I don't know it all, can you?

I would be interested in these articles. I find the logic to be fuzzy in the extreme to imagine that there is anything different enough from one motor oil to another that one could lead to premature cat failure. Usually things like that come from someone that has a failure and goes 'Yeah, and I just put that one oil in. MUST be related!' with no scientific foundation.

I guess the engineers at Castrol, Valvoline, Redline, Amsoil, and Mobil just don't know what they are doing.

Well for a follow up while some of you argue over who knows the most about the molecular level of the tea in China.....

I've changed the oil twice now on his Jeep, its been almost 10,000 miles since I went to synthetic on this engine and the cats are not plugged, the dogs are not barking and the Jeep still runs.

I swear some people on here get in a pissing match about being in a pissing match!

I ran shell rotella in my ranger for 100k and never had the cats clog, it never clogged the cat on my 88 new yorker and it burned 2 quarts every 300 miles.

The PCV system? Oil lubricating the cylinder walls?

More specifically, it was the ZDDP (zinc) that the EPA said was bad for catalytic converters, in the mid 90's, there was a push to remove it from oil. Since it's main function was to protect flat tappet lifters, and most new engines by that point had roller lifters, the OEs just went along with it.

Since diesels have historically had less stringent emissions standards, the diesel oil standards did not remove the ZDDP additive.

I ran rotella 15w40 conventional in my 2.5l TJ and had good results.

This is what I think is the old wives tale (not tail). Dino oil contains detergents, dispersants and additives as well.

This

And this

Synthetic still comes from the ground, just more "refined", molecule cracking or something fancy from what I understand. All motor oil, save for small engine oil, has detergents and dispersants.

Stepping up in weight isn't good either. Only reason to is very hot climates, IF recommended, or low oil pressure. But if the oil pressures low, that's a symptom not the problem, so heavier oil only fixes the symptom.

question ==are we talking ranger diesel engines or gasoline engines when using diesel oil. I used rotella oil in my motorcycle and had no issues ,however that was conventional diesel oil not synthetic

Alot of people like to run diesel oil in gas engines. Especially atv / motorcycles because it's jaso certified
