Default acetone - potential gas mileage increase

has anyone experimented adding acetone to gas to increase gas mileage. supposedly if you add 2% - 3% acetone you will get a gas mileage increase which ranges from 10% - 50%. if you go over 10% gas mileage goes down and you also increase fuel system problems but works at lower percentages. works for gas and diesel. is there fuel system breakdown issues with trying this( ie gasket breakdown). any info appreciated

I think ChrisFix tested that stuff with positive results.

I have seen that on youtube. I'm just wondering if anybody else had any luck with it.

Well..........it was put to the test. A real test, not some "fill" it, go 100 miles, "fill" it and check mileage, the most unreliable test possible because it can't be consistently filled. Testing was done for various acetone percentages and each test was done on 3+ full tank fillups, each at the same station and pump. Upshot is, no change in mileage at all.

Also, acetone does not harm the fuel system (in small quantities), however, before you try it I encourage you to go back and reread the article. The amount to add is more like, .1 - .3% IIRC and I'd say you overlooked the decimal point. IMO, the reason people get better mileage when they try these things is the usual reason, which is, when they are checking mileage they drive more carefully. It's not because the acetone helps the gasoline vaporize more easily due to modifying the molecule, but hey, it made for a good read.

finally tried this stuff. used 2% and on one tank only gas highway mileage increased from 28 to 34 mpg. this is canadian gas mileage. this with a 4 liter, 5 spd stock ranger. will see if mileage goes down after a couple tanks without acetone. also and this not so possitive. in town mileage still not great at 15 mpg(unchanged)

Putting acetone into your fuel tank is a bad idea, its very corrosive, can damage rubber parts, will damage your cars paint if spilled and does nothing for fuel economy.

If you want to increase your mileage, read up on hypermiling.

I would never put any solvent in my gas tank.

Second trial. Went on 300km trip. Got 32mpg with 100 acetone per 70 liters fuel. third trial 300km trip 200ml acetone per 70 liters fuel got 35 mpg. No change in town gas mileage. First trial was 225ml/34mpg. Obviously ideal amount 200-225 per 70 liters fuel. Cannot comment on if fuel system components will handle it on a long term basis.
