My '98 has 250,000 miles behind her and she's tired, real tired, she sounds more like Chitty Chitty Bang Bang than I care to admit. I'm considering an engine swap and wondering if anyone has swapped in a 4 cyl turbo engine from a T-bird, Mustang SVO or maybe a Merkur XR4Ti.

Just get the internal parts from a turbo 2.3.

Why spend money on an engine with 250k on the clock when it has several problems?

Your best option is to replace the internals with forged ones. It would be a nightmare to try and use the TC motor, because it's OBD 1 and yours is OBD 2. if you're wanting to turbo, the best way to do it is to rebuild your motor, or the easiest at least...not the cheapest though.

Why spend money on a 25 year old turbo engine that would require rewiring your truck for obd1 and would have to be rebuilt too, plus you have to purchase it too, also there's a good chance that if you find a turbo 2.3 it is going to be pretty worn out. You can 2.3 turbo setup on eBay pretty cheap.

If you rebuild it you've got an engine that is nearly new.

The eBay setups are junk. I'm currently in this process now. If his truck was obd 1 the turbo engine route would be the better choice. I paid $250 for a complete runner when I bought mine and it's in god shape. But you can get the internals out of one and put that on yours, tap your block for the return, and you'd have the same thing pretty much although I'm not sure what machine work you would need because I think the 2.5 rods are longer

I meant he could get a good used turbo manifold and turbo from a turbo 2.3 from eBay.

Oh okay, in that case yes....it wouldn't be a bad move to pick up say an e6 used and turbo. There's plenty of people that are selling knock off headers on there as well, which from what I hear have good functionality just have to be careful. I was thinking you were talking about one of those cheap "kits" people sell on there
