Yes, but how much water is that? It's a percentage - for all I know 0.08% of the worlds water is plenty for domestic use. That statistic is meaningless without relating it to domestic consumption.

I'm mostly uninformed on the issue, but I think the larger problem might be distribution, i.e. getting the available water to where it's needed (or alternately, getting people to where the available water is.)

im not saying its a problem. I just thought it was interesting that all the water we get is from .08% of the water on earth. just an interesting fact i thought.

yeah, i see what you mean - that is interesting

have to admit, even if there is enough clean water for domestic use, the amount used by agriculture and manufacturing is eye-opening

Its all completely meaningless propaganda from an organization with an agenda. And the very end where it says "much of it is too polluted to use" is the most meaningless non-specific and probably completely made up line. Its a waste of my eyesight having looked at it.

And this all of course coming from the UN. What are they going to do, send a letter?

wow, you guys can argue about anything. i suppose if i posted an article claiming the sky was blue done by the UN you would say that was biased too... but its not worth arguing with someone about something so trivial.

Well would you take NASA's word for it? I assume probably not, they are also an organization with a political agenda. Heres a question- If you can't take any scientists' word for their findings, who DO you trust when it comes to stuff like this?

http://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/Fea...ater/index.php

The majority of the water in the world is taken from fresh water rivers and lakes, with the average human consuming 2.5 gallons/day to function properly. The pollution is not always directly human-caused and was never claimed to be by any of the articles i used. Here in Florida, our aquifers are being contaminated by salt water from the ocean making its way through the water table. Other places have too much sulfur in the water for it to be consumed. Still other places the water is contaminated due to standing water or animal waste in it.

Would I take NASA's word over the UN? Yes. And NASA presents it as facts and information. Not a scare-tactic propaganda poster.

Would I argue if the UN said the sky was blue? No. But I would point out that the UN certainly didn't come to that conclusion and is just repeating what everyone else already figured out a long time ago. If it were up to the UN to determine what color the sky was, they would still be in committee.

And for the record, the sky appears blue during the day without cloud cover because the wavelength of blue light causes it to scatter when it hits the upper atmosphere. So to us down here, we see blue light instead of black outer space.

I didn't post this to scare anyone. I thought it was interesting to note how little fresh water there is when compared to salt water. You seem to have taken offense to that for some reason. I didn't post any of the points made by the article that goes with the diagram because that would've caused much more controversy and i wasn't looking for that, but since you brought up scare tactics-

Quote:
2.5 gallons: The sustainable amount of water per person much of the world is allocated per day.
80-100 gallons: The amount of water per day used by the average American citizen

$11.3 billion: The amount of money required to provide basic levels of service for drinking and waste water in Africa and Asia.

88 percent: Number of deaths from diarrhea are caused from unsafe drinking water, inadequate availability of water for hygiene, and lack of access to sanitation; this translates to more than 1.5 million of the 1.9 million children under five who perish from diarrhea each year. This amounts to 18% of all under-five deaths and means that more than 4,000 children are dying every day as a result of diarrhoeal diseases.

$35 billion: The amount of money spent on bottled water in the most developed countries in the world.

2.7 tons: The amount of plastic used to bottle water. 86% become garbage or litter.
People tend to forget that the UN is the direct result of US demands after WWII and that the UN has a much broader base to draw conclusions from than the US meaning that what it states is generally the consensus of most countries in the world, regardless of what the US thinks.
Maybe some people need to travel outside the US to see what the rest of world is like....
