our old '66 dodge D500 powerwagon was a real workhorse, we got it for free 'caus it had sat at the edge of a farmers feild for over 15 years, used my dad's '94 mazda B2000 to hook jumper cabels to it and it fired up first crank! threw it in gear and it tore the 6" diamiter oak that had grown up between the plow frame right outta the ground slant 6, 4 speed with all granny gears, 4x4 dually with a stake body & big lift gate on the back. it had a plaque on the dash that warned drivers that "exceeding 45 MPH will result in damage to axles and gears!!!". it bent the tow boom on an F350 wrecker into a cool "U" shape trying to load it up to bring it home, we had to use a freightliner wrecker. plowed snow like it was nothing, and in the summer we used it to move boulders the size of a camery off our property and grade the yard. never invested $1 in that truck, and it never quit! but dad had to sell, wanted something "smaller", bla bla bla, regretted it for YEARS now. actually tracked down 2 more that i wanna buy someday.

I drove M35 deuce-and-a-half trucks in the Army that were older than I was (mid 60's vintage.) They looked rough, each one often had it's own operational quirks, but they never stopped, never left you hanging and always got you where you were going. Not only that, they supposedly could burn anything for fuel: diesel fuel, jet fuel, kerosene, heating oil, gasoline, engine oil and automatic transmission fluid (knew guys who actually did that), and urban legend claimed even whiskey.

The 5-ton and the 8x8 HEMTT were sweeter rides, but nothing gave me the same feeling as a creaky old 2 1/2 ton - comfortable like a favorite pair of old shoes, but exciting too, and quintessentially military.

My 1987 Volvo 240. It could drive through anything, weighed 2.5 tons, and the engine ran on almost no oil for the better part of a month...put a little in when I got the chance and it never knocked or had a loss of power. It withstood being drowned, exhaust being ripped off, driven offroad, and sold it at 201ooo miles still going strong, and able to peel out (was even an automatic 4cylinder)......great car....simply great....so bummed I got rid of it...

The closest I've ever came to a "bullet proof" vehicle was my '82 Celica. The power train was still going even though the cheap Japanese steel was rusted out at 200,000 miles.

x2.. my sister bought a 90 volvo 240 a year ago for 500 bucks, the odometer didnt work but it showed 250xxx miles. no telling how many miles it really has. has a transmission leak and loses about a quart of motor oil a week but it still drives lol and the motor sounds healthy

lol , they hardly touched it , and why didn't they lite the engine compartment on fire ? And why didn't they hit that tree dead on ? That's cause they knew that if they did they wouldn't be able to drive it away , lol. Talk about a fixed show. Fuel injected systems are sealed . and so are all the electrics . Of course they could fix it quik and drive it away after drowning it .
