regardless of your current views about the government, an area set aside as national park or wilderness shouldn't be given to oil and gas companies. and a lot of areas where you are not allowed to hike or camp in are classified as wilderness. There is a difference between national park and wilderness. Wilderness lacks any sort of man made structure, including roads. If i were managing a wilderness area i wouldn't want people wandering around in there because it would be extremely difficult to rescue them once they get lost.
And beside all that, the federal government owns the land, not lease. So the federal government can determine what it wants to do with the land, the state shouldn't be allowed to overrule that, just as state owned land should not be allowed to be overruled by the federal government.
