Default Ford sees room for compact truck

Well, they may be considering a new compact truck.

I really love how Ford understands and is focusing on a TRUE compact truck and going back to its roots. Now they just need to open their eyes and realize that they already have the perfect compact truck
I'm excited to see what they make, I just hope its boxy and truck shaped and not some weird curvy spaceship minivan looking contraption lol

I couldn't have said it better!!! A truck is supposed to look boxy! Thats why I've always loved the style of Rangers. They just look like rugged little things.

I think what really sets it off for me is the distance between the front of the door and the wheel well. Our rangers have some room, and the A pillar doesn't intersect the wheel well. But take for example the new tundras and its like the front of a car with the window sloping way down and the wheel well butting up against the door..

Like what the heck happened to trucks? lol

I just wish they would go with a high mpg heavy haul like they had in the courier, only more reliable x.x
Go back to what made small trucks popular in the first place and improve ^^
Would kill for a dependable small 4x4 that gets 25+mpg and can load 3/4 ton.
My 08 ranger feels more like a F-150 without the power, mpg, or capacity x.x still love it thought

And keep it simple .. I know the majority of people out there all want the latest techno gadgets and a touch screen this and computer that all crammed in their dashboard but a truck should be a truck. Simple. Robust. Easy to work on. Leave the frillies to luxury sedans lol

I like the part about how they needed federal exemptions to produce the 2011 ranger and a total redesign If they were to continue production.

Ford imports all of its Transit Connect models as passenger vehicles by including rear windows, rear seats, and rear seatbelts.[1] The vehicles are exported from Turkey on cargo ships owned by Wallenius Wilhelmsen Logistics (WWL), arrive in Baltimore, and are converted back into light trucks at WWL's Vehicle Services Americas Inc. facility by replacing rear windows with metal panels and removing the rear seats and seatbelts.[1] The removed parts are not shipped back to Turkey for reuse, but shredded and recycled in Ohio.[1] The process exploits the loophole in the customs definition of a light truck: as cargo does not need seats with seat belts or rear windows, presence of those items automatically qualifies the vehicle as a passenger vehicle and exempts the vehicle from light truck status. The process costs Ford hundreds of dollars per van but saves thousands in taxes.[1]

And therefore don't have to pay the "chicken tax" but shipping the overseas Rangers couldn't be done this way. <- Its linked on the main article.

Anyways, what Ford should do (I liked the '11 one the way it is) but in Ford's mind-set and money for a cheap truck:

Make it a little bit smaller, make it front wheel drive, shorten the hood/front end about 6inches, all that will save money & be clearly a smaller truck. Add the option on 4wd. And add the 1.6ecoboost for 'mpgs' being around 20mpg city and 30mpg highway, and as standard. Add the 2.0 ecoboost as an option.

-small, fwd, ecoboost 20/30 will make it alot cheaper, and people will buy it for the mpgs. While I hate the idea of front wheel drive, it will be fine for people who don't go offroad, which is most of them. And still have the 4wd option for people who do.

OR

Pretty much use the ford transit as the base (unibody/fwd) and put a bed on it, and shove ecoboost in it. As well as flatening the hood a little to look more boxy.

I like the idea, if they would go do it.
Bring back a smaller truck, maybe even a 4x4 with a 4 banger again (updated of course). Enough for the necessities, like the Colorado with the 5 cylinder.

Just hope they dont make it ghey by putting on the same front end they like everything to have now, like the explorer and such.

I'll be in the new truck market soon, so they need to hurry!!

All trucks have grown so much though. When I park next to my papaws '94 single cab f150, theres really not much of a size difference.

I can't believe how big trucks have become. Almost too big. My grandpa has a 2002 Tundra and a guy with a new tundra parked right next to us a while back and it made ours look like a toy!

Best I could do, a shorter roof, but had to work with what I had.

I don't like the way any of the new Fords look, especially compared to their older models. My buddy has an 02 Escape and it looks like a tough little SUV. I saw the NEW Escape the other day and I was about to cry it was so ugly. Same with the new Explorers. They're too fat and round and smooth. Like what happened to the simple but tough boxy look? And BUMPERS? They say a part of the reason the ranger died off is because it didn't 'grow up' like the rest of the Ford lineup. Didn't have the "sync" or power seats and looked the same as it did 20 years ago etc etc .. but you know what? That's what I love about the Ranger. It doesn't need all that jazz to be a great little truck!

As for the size, I couldn't agree more! Fullsize trucks are more like OVERSIZE nowadays. And the compact ones got bigger too!
At work there's 2 Dakotas (one older style and one new), and 2 Rams (one older and one new). The old Dakota is about the size of my Ranger while the newer Dakota is now the size of the older Ram. And the new Ram is even bigger than the old one... and whenever I see H2s or that ugly Tundra I'm just like WHYYYYY is that thing 2 lanes wide and eight and a half feet tall?
And 90% of people that drive oversize trucks are complete A-holes and never use it for truck purposes..it irritates me
I do appreciate Nissan's naming schemes tho. they don't even try to hide the oversizedness with "TITAN!" and "ARMADA!"

End Rant lol
