Default post your aquariums!!

a place to post pictures, questions etc on aquariums and fish!

havent seen one of these threads and thought it would be neat, not sure how many people might participate though =/

myself, i have 3 tanks. all freshwater.

first tank - 55 gallon, with 2 albino african clawed frogs that are about 11 years old now. 3 goldfish to liven it up abit. (fake plants)

second tank - 55 gallon, with two tiger oscars, a jack dempsey, and a jaguar cichlid. all about 7-8" excluding the jack, which is about 4" and wont grow lol. (fake plants)

third and my fav tank - 50 gallon, with 3 red belly piranhas. this is a planted tank and i tryed my best to make it look natural. the piranhas are about 5-6" and i convinced myself they have outgrown their tank as of the past weekend... when one of them got scared and jumped out of the tank and hit me in the chest as i walked by.. flopped on the floor. i got him back in the tank and he is okay.
so this weekend (sat) ill be buying a custom 120 gallon tank for them, and adding 3 more piranhas so have a nice schoal. ill be ditching the HOB (hang over back) filters for a wet/dry sump system using a 30 gallon tank i have lying around. i plan on making this system all DIY and the cheapest most effective way possible.. and i will be taking pics and posting in this thread on my progess as i go.

just waiting for photobucket and ill post pics.

Sweet!

I have 4 tanks right now. all salty!

I have a 5 gallon fluval chi with 5lbs of rock and a circulation pump, holding one clown (QT tank), i have a Biocube 14 as my "old" tank, has been up for 1 yr, and its coming down shortly. I also have a rock tank, just full of live rock. thats a 10 gallon.

then theres my pride and joy. a custom built 75 gallon system, with a 36x24x16 rimless display. Half inch glass, starphire faces, 1" drain and 3/4" return.

I built the stand myself, and designed my own plumbing/sump. i JUSt started filling it last night and finished the glue today. its ready to be turned on this weekend.

please mind the dirty oscar tank, it was overdue for a cleaning and is now clean haha with all plants removed currently and doing a different set up with them (less cluttered)

heres my first oscar, when i first got him

same guy, about a month and a half later

then i got another oscar, the original one is behind, and the jaguar is to the left

heres the whole gang..

and here you can really see growth, after only 3 months, the original oscar is the bigger of the two, he grew a shit ton, with the younger one not far behind!

and a crappy last minute pic of the P' tank, not very good lighting as the tank is mid strip down.

heres my new tank all set up! 120 gallon 1/2" glass. 1" drain at the bottom of the tank for easy water changes.

currently using my old filter from my 50 gallon to keep the cycle going untill i finish up my sump. 90% done. Have 30 gallon sump set up, with 3 chambers, have the pvc all made for my overflow 3/4" drain with 1" inlet... with half inch return. just need to buy a pump and im done!!!

heater, thermometer etc will all be in the sump to get the clutter out of the tank

Wow, some nice tanks in here! Love the 3 red bellies in that deep tank. They'll get big & sexy in there. Careful, they bite! Are ya gonna put up a native Amazon-like background?

Oscars are really cool, and I love how they dominate even a big tank. A giant Green Severum does well with Oscar, and both happily eat earthworms, beef heart, and feeder goldfish.

Cichlids look pretty & are prolific breeders, but are PITA cuz they kill each other & destroy stuff. Pit bulls of aquariums.

We've never been brave enough to try saltwater. They have most beautiful colors & most variety.

Yeah, that's why saltwater is so scary to me. Beautiful, but lotsa work.

Freshwater is effortless, and mostly self-sustaining when it's big enough & over-filtered. Once per month I just change half the water, toss excess plant growth, and maybe clean filters (if needed). Otherwise, just daily feedings. All we do is enjoy the view.

I'm so tempted to install battery backup for power failures, which are rare, but can be catastrophic. We lost many big fishes that way, before. I'd hate to lose my favorite clowns.

Cool. You're gonna have a HOB style of overflow, with 3/4" dia. overflow pipe leading down to sump? Is that enough flow for 120 gallons? I have 1" PVC with Eheim 1262 pump and water gushes out so fast (700gph, noisy) that I made a PVC 'silencer' for it. Next time, I'll use even bigger pipe, to reduce outlet speed.

http://flexpvc.com/WaterFlowBasedOnPipeSize.shtml

This shows my 1" PVC spits out 7 fps at 11 gpm: http://www.engineeringtoolbox.com/pv...am-d_1147.html
