Default Ranger did it again!

Well I got a call earlier in the night that a friend got her brand new car that she hasn't had for a month, stuck in a ditch out at a local mud hole/party spot. I came out to snatch the car out and found out a full size dodge with mud tires couldn't get any grip so that guy left. I end up breaking two straps so i pulled out the chain. And if anybody knows about a 2013 Nissan Altima, there's nowhere to hook it up. We ended up ripping the front bumper off but I got her out after two trucks before me tried and failed. Needless to say no more of my friends say my truck is a girls truck. I love my Firestone destination at's

Damn you ripped the bumper off? There wasn't a place to put the recovery hook/ eyebolt thing anywhere?

We had the hook under the bumper on a engine mount, it wasn't totally ripped off but it was hanging down and flapping like a couple screws were ripped off.

Leave the chain at home Next time and please invest in a quality recovery strap Not Tow strap there is a huge difference

Partying. Duh. lol.

I've used chains for pulling out stuck vehicles before. Never have to worry about it breaking. lol.

Chains absolutely do break and they cause serious damage when they do. NEVER use a chain for snatching a stuck vehicle.

This is what happens when a chain breaks. Note in the comments it broke the back AND front windshields.

I think that had a lot to do with HOW he pulled on it. Flooring it while there's that much slack on the chain is going to put a ton of force on that chain when it tightens up. Steady pressure is all it takes.

FWIW, I do have a recovery strap that I use for anything off-road stuck. The chain gets used around the property when someone can't make it up the hill in the snow. Steady pressure with the tractor.

1000% agree. We had a guy in his 50's die in a local jeep club from a chain it him in the head.

Also one of my good friends lost half his ear it came thru the rear window cut his ear off and out the side window and distroyed his fender even. Back of the cab near the window was all distorted also.

Chains are rated for a curtain lb also just like straps and letting them get rusty is the same down fall as letting a nylon strap stay wet.

I know what chains can do when they break, I definitely wasn't yanking on the car at all because I didn't want to break anything on the car. But yeah there was a little party out there and the person that was driving hadn't been there before so he didn't know where the Holes where

Steady pressure is the only way to use a chain but most dont. Its not often that steady pressure is enough to unstick a stuck rig offroad unless you are pulling with a dozer or tractor, most trucks just dont have enough weight or traction to flat pull another truck out. From my experience it almost always requires a few good yanks which is why recovery/snatch straps are the best way to go, they are designed for that.

Yep, Ive seen some pretty good chain carnage in my experience. I learned all about the strengths and weaknesses of chains in my time driving truck in the Army, we chained everything that we hauled and we broke many chains and its never pretty when one lets go.

Paying to fix the car? Ha! That's pretty funny. I told the girl what could happen when I put pressure on that chain but She didn't care as long as she could get home. You guys really do get serious when it comes to "teaching" people how to do things. I know what i was doing. I was working with what I had. Nobody got hurt, no chains snapped, nothing happened other than me getting the car out of the smallest mud hole. I am definitely buying a quality strap but not today
