Because you are. Cars get worse mpg with it. But it does help performance a little.

Better gas?...probably not. They probably purchase from the same site as Chevron. If they don't pump a lot of gas though what they have in the tanks doesn't get refreshed as often as the the big retailers that are pumping a lot of gas everyday. Also, with todays blended gas with ethanol you need to be careful. When a tanker is dumping gas at the station the rush of gas into the tanks can cause "Phase Separation" causing the ethanol to attract any water in the tank, mix with it, separate from the gasoline and then settle to the bottom. That's where the fuel pick is for the dispensor you are using to fill your vehicle....thus pumping water and ethanol into your gas tank. Some of the big retailers have high tech dispenser filters to immediately swell up and shut off fuel flow in the event water is being pumped (Speedway). After I learned about "Phase Separation" I decided not to fill up when I see a tanker truck on the lot filling the under ground tanks. I also, shy away from ma and pa shops that don't pump a lot of gas. fyi.....I do fuel tank inspections for Milwaukee......learned all that in "skrewl"....LOL

I always put Shell gas on my ranger. I usually go for plus. I only get Arco if I need gas like crazy and if there's no other option for me.

Re: Gas! Does it matter?
I never liked getting gas with ethanol in it...but lately I havent really cared since my engine is getting swapped before ethanol can have time to hurt it that much anyways.

Re: Gas! Does it matter?
I hate any additives. Ethanol was at the base of many blown engines and lawsuits here.
I go for the lower octane level, the cheapest the better since they all come from the same source anyways, it's less volatile, plus i don't drive a race car.

Re: Gas! Does it matter?
Water can form in the tank , by condensation . Maybe the tank is old where you buy your gas ? years ago we used to have that problem here , but with epa reg's now the tanks are all updated . some can still form on gas that sits for a while in the tank as well .

Re: Gas! Does it matter?
Just to let you in on the whole watering it down theory.
My two roommates work for a major global petrol company in management and have explained it like this.
when gas is pumped through the pipeline they have to fill the lines with water at the beginning and end of the run of fuel. because the actual oil companies are held to a certain standard an dare footing the bill for the production in the first place, when that run arrives at the holding yard. the resellers such as costco, walmart, kroger, qt, etc that arent real oil companies but just purchase and resell gas, are allowed to only purchase fuel from the beginning and end of the runs and that fuel is more likely to contain water.
to make the situation worse, often the distribution points for a reseller such as a costco that doesnt sell fuel nearly as fast as a corporate or franchise store for a real oil company, their procedures are often sub par in terms of pumping water from the top of the tanks.
the only way it doesnt matter where you purchase you fuel is when it is being sold by a real oil company ie; bp, chevron, exxon......you have to be leary of the resellers but the real companies are the ones that give you the best protection.
what people really dont realize is it doesnt matter if your bp exxon or chevron. on e the same street each one bought their fuel from the same yard, same tanks and often the same truck. there isnt one bit of difference in the fuels.
additives you say? the additives that each company advertises as their own and gives it a technical name is total bs. its a federally mandated additive to produce cleaner burning engines with less harmful emission but in reality each company has found a way to market those additives as their own for some useful purpose but its nothing like that.
also on every gas pump there is a number to the local representative of the agricultural supervisor that you can call for any reason such as leaks, high water content or pumps that pump different than they register either in price or amount. if you call they will want the store number if their is on. such as texaco #53, date time etc, your name and the particular pump number you are on. and within 24hrs a dispatcher will send out an inspector to the site and get to the root of the problem. as for water content a store will lose its entire pumping system if that is the case and can be held liable to claims for damages to engines from too much water in the pumps.
also on a side not to you racers in the crowd. the ethanol levels is extremely varrying from shipment to shipment so you will never get a consistent reading on ethanol content nor octane in the mid grade.....truth is their is no such thing as mid grade gas. it is a proportionally pumped mix that pumps from the low grade and high grade takes mixing underground and then pumped into your tank. if either tanks pumps arent correctly calibrated it will pump different amounts and as such will not consistently pump the advertised octane rated gas. one day it could 91 the next 89 but it could also be 93 0r 87 just depends on the working situation you find at the pump. always choose the 87 or 93 if you want to know for sure what you have and not waste money

Re: Gas! Does it matter?
all i know is that years ago we had a ford (95 aerostar) van that started to really run like shit it was missing and hesitating just not running right and we took it in a see what was wrong and the guy said all sorts of crap and gave a really big number for how much it would cost to fix. my uncle works for ford and he ask what gas we use. my mom told him arco and he said that was the problem. because they put ethonol in there gas. he said run chevron through it a couple tanks. so we did and it ran great. i know the samething in my 74 ranchero
i think cars that are pre 2000ish wernt made to run well on the ethonol blend but with all the newer cars they seem to run just fine
i say just run chevron through your car every once in awhile when your feeling rich.

Re: Gas! Does it matter?
Mmmmm,
You guys pointed out one issue we have been through down here.
We down here have cars running on gasoline, alcohol (etahnol) and both.
What some "so-clever" guys do is mixing alcohol in the gasoline, just because alcohol is cheaper here than gasoline.
The newer electronic injected models really doesn't feel much but older ones, carburettor mainly suffer a lot, barely run.
Our alcohol powered cars have higher compression rates, as someone once posted here before.

Re: Gas! Does it matter?
I use citgo gas, cause thats all we have, other than a Speedy Q, but i have a grudge against them for something non-fuel related. Plus, with a Citgo Gift card, you get 5 cents a gallon off.
