Go do it yourself. The mailman broke my uncles mailbox then left a note saying he needed to replace it. They didn't pay for anything.

Good that they weren't too mad. I think it shows maturity by telling your parents, "Hey, I hit a guy's mail-box". I know how some over worry, but more than likely they did stuff like that too. Heck, my dad is in his 60's, and his girlfriend hates him driving her vehicle now because he is prone to do something, for instance, he scraped her F150's door against the ATM because he didn't realize "the size" of the vehicle. So, it happens regardless of age and experience.

Yes, because you damaged their property, and theoretically, they can call the police and/or you can have it reported to insurance. However, for a minor situation like this, that is not advised because of the hassle, the repercusions, and the deductible. Better to try and take care of it like adults and go from there.

I dont think his parents would care that much. He would be doing the right thing still, its just a more bullet proof way since the guy is said to be one who commits fraud.

Well I left the note and I am worried that if I go to take it back they will be pulling up their drive as soon as I am leaving.

Also the mail box is not even wrecked at all, but chances are they will see this as a opportunity to get something for free and I will end up buying a new mail box.

You'd be surprised at what stuff costs. A co-worker of mine was telling me about kids that were bored one night and decided to destroy some mail-boxes. They targeted about a dozen houses, but thankfully, they missed my friend's. They boasted to their friends who ratted them out, and when their parents found out, they made them go door to door doing whatever necessary to pay restitution. The kids had a supply list, and then, they went to Home Depot to buy the replacements. I think the average price was $150 - $175.

Now, I'm confused because first you say you destroyed the mail-box, then you say you picked up the pieces, and now you say that it isn't wrecked at all. Why did you leave a note, if you did nothing wrong? The mail-box either fell or it didn't. Is it off the post? Is it dented in any way, shape, or form? Was alcohol involved?

You don't "have" to pay anything.

Sounds like this house is relatively close to you so IMHO it's more about the whole neighbor to neighbor situation. You probably don't want any neighbor to neighbor issues, and probably don't want your neighbor telling everyone how much of a problem child you are.

I would just make sure that there's an understanding you're willing to help them restore their previous mailbox setup. This isn't a free ride to get some premium upgrade. It's like if you damage your Ranger, the insurance companies give you money to make your vehicle like it was before the accident... doesn't mean you get money to go buy a brand new Ranger.

Definitely be very apologetic about it though. From your posts it sounds like you just wiped out the post... I would see if you could fix that up yourself. IMHO it sounds much better to offer to fix it yourself.

With enough nails and duct tape you can fix anything

He never said he destroyed the mailbox nor did he say he was picking up pieces... unless I missed those posts.

He said he "took it out" which likely means the damage was below the box itself... he destroyed the post, or uprooted the post, or etc.

I worked at a hardware store, a basic metal mail box is like $14 . The wood posts are another $15..
Now the big fancy poly plastic ones are about $90.

Anyone who spends more than $100 for a mailbox, has too much money to burn...
Then u get into the fancy boxes with brick around them...i doubt he hit that kind..

I agree 100%
If he hit the brick ones I think a dent would be the least of his worries haha

too many of you are giving this poor guy a scare. no, it is not a crime or offense to run over someones mailbox. (unless you do it intentionally) which the OP clearly was not doing.
OP: just go tell the neighbor what happened, offer to fix/replace whatever needs fixing or replacing.
apologize for not talking to them sooner, but if asked why, tell them you had to take a crap real bad!

No I did not "destroy" The mailbox, the whole wood post came out, and the whole thing fell into the snow, Im 17, I dont have $150 just lying around, im saving up for collage.

So can they "if they wanted" Say it will cost $1000 to fix? The box does not look wrecked at all, just needs to be put back in ground, but the ground is frozen so I have no idea what to do. They have not called back I dont know what to do know.

Plus he lives in Minnesota, out in the country, they can't have the big brick mailbox platforms because of snow plows..hell out where I live I see many plain jane boxes taken out by snowplows..
