Wow ok just as I thought lesson time! also thought you owned a 1911 so you know how it worked... hmmm

1911
-is an external hammer style, meaning a hammer drops onto a spring firing pin. The hammer is held back by the sear it will drop when the trigger is pulled.

-1911 have Back strap safety along with manual slide safety

-only way the external hammer will fail is an extreme failure of the sear with the back up of the slide locked safety

XD
-is an internal striker design that is locked back under tension by a sear, when the trigger is pulled it drops onto the spring firing pin.

-XD has Back strap safety, and trigger safety, only XD .45acp tactical you could get a manual safety or special order tactical 9mm and .40 in later years

-only way internal striker will fail is an extreme failure of the sear

so lets see 1911 is missing trigger safety... yes XD is so safe

go shoot an LC9 before you buy it, thats all I ask. Dont go off round count. my XDsc holds 9+1 my 1911 holds 7+1 and i carry my 1911 more...

my best friend bought the LC9 before he shot it. we went the local range/shop, he shot it completely hated the gun. I had a crack at it after about 20 rounds i set it down and realized i never want one again.. and I did want one due to is figures before I shot it. my best friend sold it to the shop 10min later he hated it so much...

Actually, a 1911 can fire if dropped squarely on the muzzle, unless it has a series 80 firing pin stop. Even with the safety engaged, the sear will release the hammer. Happened roughly 1 in 6 times during drop testing, IIRC.

Still completely safe if your a responsible gun owner. A quality holster will ensure that your gun doesn't hit the floor.

My vote also goes to the 1911. Rock Island Armory makes some damn fine 1911's for less than an xd. Perfectly fine for an entry level pistol at a budget friendly price, IMO.

I do own a 9mm, but mostly use it for dispatching animals at close range. I don't carry it too often, although I don't feel ballistics are much of an issue. With today's technology, the playing field has really been leveled between calibers. I still prefer a .45, though. A 9mm may expand to the size of a quarter, but a .45 will always be at least a .45.

I drop test all of my carry guns too. Fortunately, the likelihood of a 1911 landing squarely on the muzzle is next to nil. In the test I read about (the forum is now closed, unfortunately), the guy had to use a rig to ensure that it wouldn't rotate as it fell. In the initial US Army testing, they found that it almost always would roll to one side or the other.

Like I said safer was bad word choice. It's more accident proof. Bottom line no matter how safe careful you are stuff happens. Even though it's a small chance a 1911 could discharge from a drop. Not to mention what of you forget to put the safety on 1911. On the xd without it being grabbed it won't fire. So again it's more accident proof.

What good would a back strap do on a xd-9? There is no hammer for the strap to stop.
