My computer has been giving me hell!
So I am currently copying about 300GB of data from my storage hard drive to my operating system hard drive through MS-DOS, lemme explain why.
I have lately been getting random freezing, crashing, blue screen of death.
C:\ - operating system
D:\ - storage (games, programs, movies, music, etc.)
I have re-installed Windows 7 five times in two months on C:\ and the issues listed above have followed me across every installation.
First course of action was verifying that my processor wasn't taking a dive. After extensive stress testing, it passed with flying colors.
Second, I had to verify that my RAM wasn't going bad, so after extensive testing with memtest v4.20, it completed every test without error.
Third, I thought it may be a bit of software that was causing instability, so I installed a clean version of Windows 7 and disabled windows update thinking it may have caused my issue. The issue persisted. I then thought that perhaps my browsers were causing my issues since it WAS, at least to my knowledge, only happening during web browsing. The issue persisted across all browsers, and then started happening at complete random no matter what I was doing.
Fourth, I downloaded Seagate's DOS Tools to check my hard drives. It took three hours to scan one of my two drives, and I thought at first that I had selected my C:\ drive (volumes weren't labeled with letter designators,) but instead scanned D:\. D:\ passed without error, and that I am happy for. I did not scan C:\ yet, but that will come at a later point.
Fifth, I decided to back up all my data from my storage drive, temporarily onto my C:\ drive. The reason for this is simple.
Once the copy of 300GB of data completes, I plan to use DBAN (Darik's Boot and Nuke) to completely wipe my current D:\ drive clean. Some of you may ask, why not just use Window's format option through Window's installation? The reason for this is that Microsoft made a major software design flaw of the format function. While you think your data is actually beind removed, all that happens during a Window's "format" is table entries being removed. This is a major issue since, during installation of Windows, it searches for core files and uses those instead of copying them from the DVD. This is a horrible problem if some of your core files are corrupt from a previous installation. Saving myself some possible headache here. This process will likely take anywhere from one to three hours alone.
Now, after that it is onto a clean install of Windows 7 onto my current D:\ drive and downloading/installing all Window's updates. This will take a combined time of around one hour.
Once this is complete, I can then transfer all of my files back to the D:\ drive from its backup I created on my C:\ drive.
After all of that, I will delete all data through Windows from the C:\ drive and run Seagate's DOS tool on it. The great thing about the DOS tool is that there is a CHANCE that it can repair any bad blocks it finds, but if not, I'm only out less than a hundred bucks for a new drive (which I might do anyway.) Again, this will be three hours of scanning.
If the DOS tool finds and repairs any/all bad blocks, I can then run DBAN on it and use it as backup storage (since I likely won't trust it after all these issues.)
All of this just to determine if my drive is bad.

Couple things i can think of off the top of my head
1. Something may just be loose, that would explain why it's passing all the test but if its moved in any way and comes loose your crashing.
2. Your copy of windows 7 is missing some data. Depends if your downloading or using the factory disc

Lol miller, just cause you get dumped and get into gay porn doesn't mean everyone does. Don't start shit if you don't want your life public kid.
RangerSport: nah, it's not anything like that. Noticed Event Viewer a while back said I had a bad block on C: but it wasn't giving me issues, so it went ignored.
Legit windows 7 disk

Re: My computer has been giving me hell!
lol, got everything done; transfering over files to new OS drive right now.
Spent 30 minutes on the phone with Microsoft sorting out activation (my copy is an upgrade copy, but since I didn't have the OS previously installed on this drive, it wouldn't let me activate...)
They simply bypassed my key and activated it with a code from their end. Works for me lol.
Can't wait until this transfer is complete and I can install everything that needs to be installed again, and delete a bunch of crap I probably don't need!
Yawn; spent all day, on top of all my previous time working on this today; well, besides shoveling once an hour between 4am and 12pm.

I didn't see you upgrade or check the version of your computer's BIOS. Since you're re-installing anyway this is a great time to do that. It may be that your drive controller is out of sync with your disk OS drivers and that is what is causing your problems.

Forgot to mention that before. This has been on the latest (0903) BIOS since I brought home the machine.
CM Storm Scout Case
Rampage III Formula motherboard
Intel® Core™ i7-970 3.2GHz (6 core/12 thread)
Corsair H80 water cooling
BFG 1000w 36A (BFGR1000WEXPSU) power supply
OCZ 6GB DDR3 (OCZ3P1866C9LV2G 6GB triple channel RAM kit)
MSI GTX 560ti Twin Frozr II 2GB GDDR5/OC and nVidia GeForce GT430
2x 1TB SATA Seagate Barracuda 7200RPM
Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit
Well, the verdict is in! Sea DOS Tools froze 1/3 of the way through its scan on the drive I used to have my OS on! Bad drive it is!
Time to start lookin for deals on 1TB+ drives to replace it.
