Having worked once at a quick oil change place, and seeing what went on there, I will change my own oil until I am physically unable.

My city recycling center has an oil dump.
I have 2, 5 gallon cans in my garage. When they are full I dump them.
Probably once a year.

It seems like the oil change shops either overtorque your filter and plug to abusive levels, or they do the opposite and screw them in about halfway so they fall out while you're driving..
