Default MacGyver must have had this Duramax

So today got to work and I was given a job to replace valve cover gasket on a 2005 GMC with a duramax diesel. Not really looking forward to do it cause it takes about 6 hours to do.

They guy who owned it wrote down on the paper. He bought the truck last week guy was up front that it had a leak at the lower valve cover and just needed a new gasket.

I get into getting the valve cover off and just before I get to where I can pull it out. I notice around one nozzle are a large amount of stuff that looked like bondo. I finally got the valve cover off to discover it was possibly bondo or some other type of aluminum bonding agent.

I looked at the valve cover gasket and it was defiantly not the problem. No tears or anything in it. I poked at the stuff caked on there and my punch went through it. I flipped it over and discovered something totally unexpected.

They took some type of Pepsi can cut it to size and put it over the hole then used the bonding agent to cover it up.

Here is the top side of the cover

Here is the Pepsi can on the back side the circle hole is where my punch went through it. Toward the bottom u can see psi co, inc at the top you can see Pepsi

So after I discovered this I had to call the owner and break the bad news to him he not only needs a gasket but he needs a lower valve cover also.

That's the valve cover? I would go strangle the guy who sold it to me without telling me that!

That is the lower valve cover it has another piece that goes on top of it.

I was not really wanting to call the guy to tell him. It is our policy though the person working on the vehicle calls so there is no "Well let me find out and call you back"

So he said some word I wont repeat and he said he would see me first thing in the morning. I texted him the same pictures I posted so he knew I was not making it up.

I kinda wanna go with him when he confronts the guy who sold it to him. I believe this was a 1 owner truck prior to him buying it. That was sorta what I got out of the phone call between all the yelling and swearing.

And all he would have had is a paperclip, two sandwich bags, and a cap off a plastic bottle.

It really was not leaking at all. The guy only brought it in to have the gasket replaced due to the guy saying it was needing to be replaced.
He was just trying to avoid a bigger situation later down the road

It might have been another person who did it and not the last owner. Hell I worked on a car that came straight from an ASE certified garage that had stuffed a valve cover with steel wool to help control oil blow by on a jeep 4.0.............took me hours to get it unstuck from all of valve train

another time I stopped to help a lady broke down on the highway and same kind of stuff from a certified garage. The mechanic had actually used a rubber tire patch to stop leak in a fuel injection pressure rail, needless to say here 150.00 did not buy much service
