Not to bite your head off....
but to say it is "an all around better truck" is an Opinion... one based on the driver and what the driver needs and wants....and how it fits his/her lifestyle.
Its like saying "this seat is un-comfortable" that is an opinion, and EVEN if you could get a hundred people to say the same thing, then you just have a hundred "opinions", because it just takes one to say it "is comfortable" to prove that its an opinion.
Such terms as "better" and "comfortable" are feelings/emotions. To state a FACT, you would have to simply say "the f-150 is a bigger truck" because size/mass is a determined FACT.
Thus you can't say that Because the F150 is Bigger that it makes it BETTER.... that doesn't make sense.
The issue on the mileage... so what if they get the same mileage..... if my ranger gets the same mileage, of lets say a Ford Mustang... should that just mean that i should go and get the mustang??
If the F-150 and the Ranger get the same mileage, u can then look at it this way: With the F-150 you get 18mpg (estimated guess) and the Ranger you get 18mpg, you would ASSUME that getting the F-150 is the best choice, it's bigger, more power, etc...
But maybe for some, bigger isn't Better, more power isn't better...
Lets factor in the INSURANCE COST.
The F-150 being bigger and more expensive and with a larger engine, is going to cost more to INSURE (and I'm sure more to maintain)/ Of course there are alot of other factors that affect insurance costs, like where you live, age, even gender, driving record, and so forth. BUT the logic is that if one thing is bigger and is worth more, then it must be more to insure.
I drive less than 10K miles a year.... i have a small garage (no way an f150 is going to fit in it!)
I live like 3 blocks from work.
The most i ever tow/haul is my flat bed with my two atvs.
90% of the time, its just ME in the truck... so a large truck with all that extra room, would be a waste for me.
If I got an F-150, i would have to build a bigger garage... more money... or it would have to sit out all the time and really get beaten by the snowy minnesota winters, so more wear and tear there.
But really, these conversations have been done time and time again, Ranger vs F150, Ranger being Discontinued (In the USA), and the whole small truck market...
Obviously the small truck market is still there.... you say you "think its dying", i won't disagree, but i do think it's leveling off... but think about all those high school kids just getting licenses, with little money, the Ranger (or other small truck) is a good option over a huge spendy truck.
They make good work and fleet trucks, they make good off-road fun trucks, they make good grocery getters, they make good toy/atv haulers, etc... the list goes on and on.
If the market wasn't there, Toyota, Nissan, Dodge, Mazda, GM/Chevy, they all would drop their small truck lines. Ford was just STUPID when they decided to. They figured all the Ford people would just stay loyal to the Ford brand and just go buy an F150, but they will see, those Ford people will turn to the other brands.
What Ford should have done was just limit/cut production of the Ranger.
The auto market gets flooded with millions of vehicles coming off the assembly lines, just to sit in a lot till they get bought by a dealership, where they will sit even longer til a consumer comes.
The market is way flooded, there are a ton of Rangers out there..... no need to go buy a brand new one, when there are still ones less than 5 years old that are still brand new, with little to no miles on them.
And look at this forum... there are tons of old old rangers still on the road.. and even some newer ones like mine, where people have put in new/rebuilt motors, just to keep their trucks on the road, all instead of biting the bullet and buying a brand new one..
If you make a product that last for a long time, or that people are willing to fix and keep running, then it will be a long time before they come back and buy a NEW ONE. But be assured, when the time comes, they will have been satisfied with their truck that they will want to buy another one.
But if you make a product that DOESN'T LAST and that people can't or aren't willing to try to fix and keep running, then the consumer will obviously not buy that product again.
