A couple other points i'd like to mention, and I apologize for my long post. The most frustrating thing to me about hearing about the Colorado shooting is the innocent victims. It is the media's duty to report news, but they typically distort the facts, focus only on the alleged perpetrator, and then hardly mention the victims. Surprisingly, I think that the media did a better job reporting this than in the past. However, there are problems with reporting if anyone can buy hundreds of rounds of ammo online w/o a red flag somewhere. Ordinary citizens should not be able to out-arm themselves in that fashion. Also, there is an obvious loop-hole if an individual can purchase a weapon of such magnitude in a store, such as Gander Mountain, and no reporting has to occur unless two weapons or more are purchased at the same time. So, he allegedly did what a criminal with a need for weapons does. He went a couple days later to another Gander Mountain for another purchase of the same weapon, so it doesn't have to be reported. Before the shooting, he was a law abiding citizen, but isn't that the way it always is? If I went to proper training in Ohio to become legally able to carry a weapon, then part of the background check would entail "the shop" to notify the state of my intentions, correct? So, again how come no red flags were raised? Unfortunately, I don't have the answer, and I do not advocate getting rid of guns, but to think that something of this magnitude can be prevented with or without more legislation is absurd. To close, I think that it shows another example of falling through the cracks. We don't know much about him or his family. Ironically, his mother didn't seem too surprised that her son could be in trouble. Now, the news is reporting that the gunman evidently sent a notebook with very detailed graphics of a massacre to a college psychiatrist.

To answer Michael's comment, I would like to say that you can easily go through 150 rounds at the range in 15 minutes with a .40 handgun. When you pay for an hour long session, that is around 600+ rounds down range. Saying you should not be able to buy hundreds of rounds is like saying you should not be able to pump more than three gallons of gas.

I have no problem with someone owning a concealed weapon, but why would an everyday citizen need an assault rifle or two? I know hunters that aren't equipped like that.

It could be temporary or a trend. The citizens definitely had quite a scare, but I maintain that the average person should probably rely on someone else for protection because I don't feel that the little training required is enough to prepare one during the ultimate time of need.

But yes, nearly every Swiss household has a fully automatic rifle in it. Switzerland takes its neutrality and independence VERY seriously. A very nasty surprise awaits anyone who would try to take it from them.

The crime rate there is very low, but they are not ammune to violence. In 2001 a mentally disturbed man walked into one of the canton (state) Parliament buildings with a non military assault rifle and a handgun, and killed 14 people before shooting himself. He had a criminal past, and it was illegal for him to posses these weapons.

The Swiss do keep violent crime statistics. They have about 30-40 crimes, or attempted crimes, using firearms per year (about the same as one summer weekend in the gun-banning city of Chicago). The numbers are about double that for crimes implementing edged weapons.

And it proves 2 things, a nation with its people armed is a much safer place to live. And, there are always criminals and will always be crime.

So, no matter which way you go or try to fight for, say (mandatory gun ownership or gun ban), there will always be crime and no way to prevent it.

All of you are correct. The U.S. is SUPPOSED to be like Switzerland but we lost our way a little bit at a time. It all started when the War of 1812 was going on and some of the MIlitia units refused to invade Canada (it was still a British colony at that time). The argument was that the Militia was a purely defensive force. The government didn't like that. Notice that we no longer have an active citizen militia (aka unorganized Militia) anymore and the National Guard's (the organized militia) role has changed dramatically.
