Re: How to fish the surf? (Bodega Bay, CA)
okay so the descriptions are lame
for this rig
for striped bass and other regular fish
number 6 octopus hook?
what size 3 way swivels? does it really matter? i can use my best judgement and get like mediumish ones
the leader= 100 lb monofilment?? this was the advice someone else posted up, in walmart there seems to be ready made wire leader connections where i make the rig myself but they seem long.
also should i use the premade hook loops or make my own set up? i have no issues tying hooks on myself
----------
more research says i can use the dropper loops, i used to use a similar set up with striped bass in the delta where i took premade hooks and looped it thru each other, never broke when i used it. i figured they would work fine, if so im gonna learn how to make a dropper loop.
----------
another question, if i use monofilment for my leader. should it be lighter or heavier than the line on my pole? based on availability i will probably end up with 25 lb test line on my pole (high visability green)
----------
i can also pick up 15 lb but its not high visability. id rather have the right test over right color. so help

Re: How to fish the surf? (Bodega Bay, CA)
Well I always used heavier leaders, mine were always braided cable. So really I don't think it matters, but I do know that some people like lighter leaders really I think it's all personal prefferance at that point.

Re: How to fish the surf? (Bodega Bay, CA)
i havent read much of what was on here since i dont live anywhere near an ocean but i highly recommend using power pro braided line. It is a bit pricey but worth every penny. I use the 8# power pro and have caught 37-40" northern pike with no leader. Granted i did cut and retie after i landed the fish it still didnt break. If i was using mono i would have lost those fish guaranteed

Re: How to fish the surf? (Bodega Bay, CA)
walmart will have spider wire. But i fortunately have a cabelas 5 minutes down the road from me. along with everyother major outdoors store. I would just order some power pro off the internet it will be cheaper than gettting it from a store. Let it be noted though that you have to carry a scissors with you because you are not going to bit this line off if you need to change hooks or lures

Re: How to fish the surf? (Bodega Bay, CA)
Amazon has always been really fast on there shipping. Like i mentioned earlier this stuff is pricey but there is enough for 2 reels. I usually get 2 full seasons out of this line. After you use it for a season and get ready for the upcoming season. i will tape the end of the line to my garage door and walk away so that i am emptying the spool of line. WHen the spool is empty i walk back to the garage door, and tie the end that was taped to the door to the spool. And iam good to go for another season
