Wanting a dirt bike but need help
Hey guys my birthday is coming up and I'm thinking I'm going to go out and get a dirt bike. But I'm having trouble deciding if I should get a 250 or something smaller. I know how big they are and I know there monsters but I'm i'm thinking if I get a 125 or 150 it will get old and i'll need more power . i'm 5' 9 and about 175.
I ride more ATVs than dirt bikes so this will be kind of new to me. My girl friend has a 250 CAM AM and a honda 300 ex. And the 300 is A LOT more fun to ride cause of the power. My buddy has a kawasaki kfx 700 and that thing is fun but scares me at times lol.

Re: Wanting a dirt bike but need help
buy a beater 125 or 150 to learn on. that way you can dump it over, mess it up, and not care cuz it was cheap. then sell it when you've figured out that 2 wheels are better and buy a bigger bike that you won't ruin by dumping it over while you learn.

250 four stroke. Any make. I dont like the hondas cause there just one cam. Where the yamahas are dual cam 5 valve. I loved my YZ250F.

Re: Wanting a dirt bike but need help
oh and btw, the trail bikes like the 125/150/225 four stroke air cooled bikes are junk. They are fun, but way underpowered. Get in a motocross or the street version of motocross. You wont be dissapointed

you'll find 2 wheels are better than 4. Especially if you get into getting air born. Dont have to worry about launching not square.

Re: Wanting a dirt bike but need help
you can pick up a used yz for around 1,200-1,700. You dont need anything brand new. I would look for at least an 03 yz250f. That was the first year for auto decompression.

Shoot for an older 2 stroke 250. You can't kill them unless you have no idea how to keep a bike maintained properly. I have a '96 YZ250 and the thing still fires right up on the first kick. Rides great still. You can also find 2 strokes super cheap and could put a little money into one and have a great bike.

Re: Wanting a dirt bike but need help
Mine is a Yamaha but I know of many people who have older suzukis and hondas that are reliable. Between my 250 and my '06 honda 450, the 250 has definitely been more fun to ride and easier to maintain. easier to ride in the woods also!!

Re: Wanting a dirt bike but need help
Dont get a 2 stroke. A 4 stroke bike will put the 2 stroke to shame and its much easier to ride. You dont have to keep them wound out all the time either. You will love a 4 stroke.
fwiw, I re-geard my bike down. From 49 tooth to 46 in the back. This gave me more top end. And it did not hurt the bikes low end. (pure torque monster) On a straight out race, I beat my buddies. One had a YZ250 and the other a YZ125.

I agree that a 4 stroke is a great bike due to the fact that I own one, yes it will destroy a 2 stroke in a race no problem, but can you find a good one that will run forever for 2 grand? even if you buy a dump of a 2 stroke for a grand you can put a grand into it and make it a bad ass bike. If he plans on riding tracks all the time then I would say spend a bit more to get a 4 stroke and be competitive but if he is looking to be in the woods most of the time, a quick peppy 2 stroke will beat a sluggish 4 stroke any day.
