Mine learned pretty quick to be honest, at first he would pull pull pull, all the time.
Pick a side that you want him to walk, then make sure everyone walks him on that side, Cody will walk on my left side, hold the leash in the left hand and have it passed over to your right so its across your body, (until he can walk nice, this give you more control when checking him to the side, a check is a sharp pull across your body so pulling him sideways and off balance)
You have to remain calm, the more annoyed you get, the more the dog will sense it and play up. so ALWAYS REMAIN CALM AND RELAXED.
We had a "Slip Collar" from the word go, NEVER use a harness, they are designed for pulling and tracking, no use to anyone training a dog to heel and walk properly.
Our Leash was a rope with a loop on the end, like a noose if you like, but moved freely, keep it high on the dogs neck, about as high as it will go, looks uncomfortable but its most effective the closer to the head it is, no point in putting it at the base of the neck because when you "Check" him/her (short sharp correction which is a quick snap pull of the leash to the side, NOT back) then it won't have the same effect, if you check your dog with the collar high up on the neck to the side, the whole body is effected, and it snaps the dog out of its prey drive obsessive pulling mode and the dog takes note, focus is back on you where it should be.
Always say heel, to the dog as you check him, and as soon as he starts to walk inline (if not slightly behind you is the ultimate aim) then loosen your grip on the leash, don't be fighting the dog all the time or your will encourage it to pull back, so when hes walking nice, give him slack.
If she is pulling you about also try just stopping dead. or switch directions, and pull the dog around with you and catch him off guard, they hate that, dogs just love to be leading so when you change direction they start to realise who is following who!!!
He will soon learn that pulling just makes you stop, and takes even longer to get to where he wants to go, he will also learn that your sharp turning is not doing him any favors if he is out in front and can't see when your about to do them, it will only take a few weeks for him to "get it" and start walking, what you actually want is him to be looking up at you in awe.....lol
Totally focused on YOU and what your doing.
Hope that helps.

No worries, sorry if it comes across as preaching, it's not meant to come across like that
guys!!
Everyone has their own methods, he's my first dog and not really recommended as a first dog really I did a lot of research and had to really get my dog trained fast, he's a powerful breed with a very stubborn nature and the potential to do a lot of damage to people and other dogs so it was really important to us that we worked with him and were consistantly sticking to the rules to avoid any confusion.
No sleeping on our bed, no getting on sofa, he's not allowed upstairs either.
He's turned out awesome, no nasty sides no fights no attitude.
I think Surfer and I train very similar and it really does work!!
He seems to type what I was "about" to type haha

lol, i had a puppy that was part german shepherd, part akita, part black lab. when she was only 5 months old she would dominate full size german shepherds. she was a fighter. but she didnt get a long with our older dog who we've had for 10 years. we had to give my puppy back to the shelter because i was away at college and my parents couldn't devote enough time to train her and not fight with our other dog. this was her:
i still miss her, and we can't live with just one dog, so thats why we now have a golden retriever.
too any one looking to get a good, trainable, first dog i highly suggest a golden retriever. they are probably the easiest dogs to train, they're not aggressive, and they're the quietest. lol, except when their hungry.

another thing to add to the above (maybe I missed it while reading) is to teach your dog that nothing in life is free... when giving treats, toys, etc... make the dog work for it for a second, weather it would be a trick, or a simple command of down, stay you walk away, tell the dog to come and then give treat/toy. Just make sure you make them do different things just to keep them on their toes (mental stimulus is just as important as physical exercise. When training, keep your session to about 5 min, but repeat about 3 times a day, and when possible in different environments (indoor and outdoors). I have come across quite a few pups that were perfectly trained indoor, but when taken outside, completely didn't know what to do. Last thing, dogs are creatures of habit that need stability and structure. If you feed your dog in the morning, then in the afternoon, do it at the same time regardless of what day it is. This will also help make their "bathroom schedule."
