Unhappy Very bad news for me....

Apparently my local onocologist screwed up and got over ruled big time. I got a very bad report last wednesday at UVA. That onocologist was strait forward with me and I have 2 options. The first was ruled out immediately and that was amputation of my left leg. The second is to remove part of my pelvis and thigh bone which will take place on April 18th at UVA. I'll be getting a little bit more info tomorrow from my local onocologist tomorrow morning at 11: Am. The doctor at UVA has pretty much said that I'll be disabled after this surgery and that there was an extremely good chance that I'll never be able to drive a manual transmission of any kind ever again. So I now have to figure out what to do considering my ranger has a manual transmission. I can either trade it which I don't want to do at all, or I can do a V8 swap with an automatic tranny and keep what I have which is what I'm leaning towards. The minimum I'll be in the hospital is anywhere from 3 to 5 days. This was devistating to hear. What hurt me worse is when mom went all to pieces after hearing this news. I'm not even 40 yet and I'll have an artificial hip, thigh bone, and part of my pelvis will be artificial. The chances of this bone cancer coming back is 10 % but the surgeon/onocologist is confident that it won't be back after this surgery. The 3rd option I have is to do nothing and die which is definately not an option.

Obviously, a shocker, and I can't imagine what you are going through, but I am sincere in hoping that the doctor is accurate when stating that there is only a 10% chance of the cancer coming back. I hope things go smoothly for you, and you may need to get your vehicle modified in order to drive legally. I know that instead of needing a brake on the floor that you can have a hand brake on the steering wheel. In high school, a buddy broke his leg and tried driving a stick VW with his left leg and let's just say he ended-up driving a minivan for a while. Good luck to you.

we drive with our right leg, no need for legal stuff, unless driving a manual, grandpa drives with his prosthetic leg on his right, no needed modifcations

I'm sorry your having so much trouble.. If it's any help, I have a friend whose leg was amputated due to complications from diabetes. Hw told me it was the best thing to ever happen to him - he is no longer in pain, he wears a prosthetic leg and walks just fine and because of the prosthetic leg, has met a wonderful woman and is very happy.
you have my prayers for a safe and speedy recovery in whatever decision you make.

I can't imagine how you and your family feels. Seems to me that the new doctor is very confident in his prognosis.

Best wishes for a speedy recover and a safe and successful surgery.

You and your family will be in our prayers.

If he's anything like my grandpa and I, having to sell your beloved vehicle is much worse than having cancer in your leg(s). My grandpa had a series of strokes last September-October, and the third one was the one that kept him from doing anything. He was an avid Farmall collector, and was always driving or working on one of the tractors. Once he couldn't drive or work on them anymore, it took about a week before he got sick and passed away.

umm....idk how i turn it arond since you and i have never argued on here as far as i know.... and i showed my concern and also gave him my own expierience

if anything i gave him something to look forward to despite the potential amputaton. because i am family with 2 people who have issues with their legs, one requiring a modified van, the other requiring nothing but 15 mins rest every 2 hours of driving

ive seen a man hop out of his car with only his right leg, hell be fine to drive and hell be fine in general it does suck but we all pick up ourselves and move on

to the OP:

i am currently studying to be a recreational therapist and one of my more interested focuses is working with disabled people and physical activity, im actually on my computer right now working on a paper about it, so please dont hesistate to ask me questions if you decide you want to keep in shape, your physical therapist will help but i figured id offer myself as well keep in mind i am a studen, not a full blown therapist yet
