Default Whats Your Mechanical Background?

Im just curious to know

I always followed my dad into the garage and watched when I was little, so as I got older he taught me more. I was rebuilding Chevy 350's with him for fun while doing the brakes for my tia's car when I was 13. When I turned 16 I started going to college in the mornings before high school to learn air frame mechanics. I interned at Boeing San Antonio where I worked on KC-135s and C-17s. During this time I also learned body work the hard way,i.e. wrecking my old truck and rebuilding the front end twice. Once I graduated high school/finished my course work for my air frame certification I joined the Army where I now work on helicopter engines(and get half my screen name from!). I know engines fairly well, can do some body work, and get by with the transmission. Throw an electrical problem my way and I drag my knuckles trying to do it, definitely my weak spot. I think Im pretty good for my age though I know I got A LONG way to go before Ill be able to stop calling my dad for a second opinion

Ill say that in my 20 years of life Ive spent just about half of it with tools.

Still learning, but considerably better. Mind you I am still in highschool, and plan to keep Mechanics/Auto as my hobby, not my job. I have always grown up building and repairing stuff. Since we got dirt bikes, I have had a HUGE knowledge gain from them, and now with my truck I learn more and more.

I can take stuff apart, clean it, and put it all back together again. Do I need my Dad's help? Sometimes. He is no mechanic, but back in the day did all the work on his own cars, so he is well ahead of me.

I consider myself to be knoledgeable when it comes to mechanics and such. Can I rebuild my trucks engine? Hell no. Do I have the ambition to attempt it? Hell yes.

well my Dad sucks with cars, so i learned from my buddie's dad who used to build stock cars as a hobby, then i started helping my brother rebuild motors and transmissions on his 79 Buick Regal, now I'm becoming a certified GM mechanic at a local dealership

started fixing my mountain bike when i would break it and have no money to take it to the bike shop. learned to clean and tune the derailleurs, rebuild and tune the shocks, and true wheels. that and r/c cars were my first endeavor into working with my hands.

got a goped and re-built the engine with all the go fast goodies. what a waste of money.

took auto in high school and from there learned as i went. helped a lot of friends with their engine rebuilds, wiring, and race car/truck prep. got a job recently at an off road shop which taught me more. i'm no pro but i can get my way around a vehicle. it's nice knowing people who know more than you and can teach you how to do things.
