Re: Whats Your Mechanical Background?
My dad's been working as a mechanic/Light equipment operator/etc for the municipality for over around 30 years. My uncle has been messing my cars since he was 12 so i've learned a good deal from them. I'm also in a automotive technology program at school that takes up half the day and both teachers in there have taught me a ton.

I've been bending wrenches in some form or fashion since I was young. I started doing it on aircraft in 1987. My automotive skills have been a learn as you go thing with no formal training unlike my aircraft work.

Re: Whats Your Mechanical Background?
From the time I turned 5, my dad made sure that I always had toys that you could take apart and put back together. From the Home Depot sets, to cars with interchangeable wheels. Then, when I turned a few years older, he promoted me to tool fetcher, and light holder. Then when I was 8, I was pulling tires off of everything he worked on. I also watched him tear down motors. Then when I was 15, my parents bought my F150 as a father-son project. But my father and I went separate ways shortly there-after, so I was left to do the work on my own. I joined a popular Ford Truck site, and after gaining some confidence, I started tearing into my F150 doing little things like gasket changes, and then I moved up to oil pan swaps, which turned into complete interior swaps, and then to a complete engine tear-down.
I'm mainly self taught, although I have watched my dad do much of the same repair work as I do now.

Re: Whats Your Mechanical Background?
I have built countless cars and trucks everything from race engines and cars to basic rebuilds and restos. Went to auto mechanics school for 3 years - stopped just short of getting my ASE Master Tech - first time the auto strikes started, I decided to stop. Well that and its just more of a hobby. I have a few friends that raced (nothing pro) and I used to build there engines. I have build everything from 5.0s to 5.8s, all the way to grudge drag radial and outlaw grudge stuff. My big specialty is LS engines.
In fact I still have the programs on my computer where I can test out my figures and combinations before I actually build it. I use to have a pretty good client base and worked out of my garage for quite awhile.
But haven't done anything recently because of my health.
I also have a pretty good architectural background. I getting back into this big time because I am contemplating going back to school to get the degree. I have the know-how but not the degree. For my birthday I am getting a CAD architecture program so I can start re-learning design home structure building and planning.

Re: Whats Your Mechanical Background?
I owe alot of my knowledge of vehicles and mechanics in general to my dad. My father owns a collision repair business so I grew up around the repair industry. Ive always been a do it yourself kind of person so Im self taught as well. The way I look at it is why pay someone to fix it when I can do it myself and maybe learn something along the way.

Re: Whats Your Mechanical Background?
I also owe much to my Dad. I hung around him a lot during my early years. He seemingly could do anything. Woodworking, machine work, electrical. I helped were I could as he frame off restored 3 cars.
He was a perfectionist in every sense of the word. "If it's worth doing, it's worth doing right!"
I want to know how everything works. I can take anything apart, and put it back together in the same order it came apart. I started at a young age fixing small engines, and have rebuilt several automotive engines.
I enjoy reading technical manuals over literature.
Assembly directions? We don't need no stinkin directions! Just give me an exploded view illustration.

Agree 120%. You either do it right or don't do it at all. The second part is just plain funny.
