I think the battery is toast. Probably gonna need to replace it. $50 or so?

Take it from me. I run my IX which is a full street registered vehicle on a mini battery the size of many lawnmower batteries. My battery is 3" X 7" X 6". If you leave an auto-tender on it the battery should last just fine, especially since it is only an ATV, compared to starting a fully built 2.0L I4.

i won't argue but since i use the winch for my plow it's constantly being raised and lowered so the battery gets a good workout. what all does the ix have for electrical draw? i'm not familiar with what those are

I have no radio, everything is converted to LED (draws less power) but I do have LEDs installed here and there (strictly cosmetic) It's probably not much different than most of the cars except I have a built engine and 152 lb fuel injectors which take alot of cranking power due to the fact that I am trying to start the engine with monstrous injectors (like trying to fill a shot-glass with a garden hose)

For a plow I would be using some sort of alternator with better windings for current output.

Both my IX and 3.0 Ranger don't get driven during the winter, or in rain. Whenever they are parked they are on auto-trickle chargers.

Not quite. If you do that with a healthy battery to begin with, it will help. And it will only help if your alternator can carry most of the load while in use. If the load exceeds the alternators supply, then the battery will be discharged while running and that kind of use kills starting batteries.

In this case, his battery is already toast. Putting a charger on it is like putting a dead body on a respirator and a bypass machine. Yes, there are electrons flowing but as soon as you take it off, you still have a dead body/battery. That dead battery is a massive drain on the alternator which is why the electrical components don't work right even with the alternator running.

Replace the battery first of all. Then to keep it healthy, put one of those battery maintainers on it when not in use.

i guess i'll just have to abandon the atv and get the dodge out to plow with and burn $3.00 a gallon diesel fuel which sucks. i shouldn't have to buy a battery every 4-6 months since it runs fine all summer.

I was assuming the draw wasn't pulling more than the alternator was capable off. My batteries die in about a year and a half, but thats the price I pay for the weight reduction, and room for bigger plumbing.

His normal draw probably isn't more than the alternator can supply. However, the already dead battery is adding to the load and making it more than it can supply. Its like a black hole sucking down the current from the alternator and preventing anything else from working right.

Same thing that happened to my car in the summer. Glad my batteries only cost 70$ special ordered!

Hmm. Alright I'm perplexed. I was figuring on the battery just being old and dead. But this new battery shouldn't be dead already. I revert back to the possibility of the alternator not being up to par resulting in the battery being drawn down.

i had the battery tested today and the guy said it was OK but was just drained from being out in the cold and not used? i put it on the charger for 12 hrs and it seems to be holding around half charge so far i used it and had no issues but still need to charge it some more.
i'll still use my big dodge for the major plowing since it's still not up 100%

I'm not sure i trust that diagnosis of the battery based on the description of what its doing. How was it tested?
