I didn't mean all dork. But quite a bit. My ex's sister never changed the oil in her Cavalier. At around 80K it started knocking then pow. Mommy paid for a new engine and since it was a Z24 Cavalier and she went to the dealer she dropped 4K on a new engine.

This happens with a lot of stuff but seems like cars and computers are the worst. How could you not even know the brand, not to mention take care of something that your life pretty much depends on

Okay, that poses a good question. I was reading the owner's manual one day while waiting some where. I was bored okay! It said I should change the oile every 7k? I thought really? I usually change my cars 3-5K depending on what kind of driving I do. I usually drive my Focus a lot of highway miles to and from work (27 miles 1 way). I drive my truck around town. A lot of stopping and going with my paper route. My wife drives the Dodge van, which I hope to rid of some day and replace with a Ford Explorer or something with a 3rd seat and 4 wheel drive.

Opinions welcome.

x2!! I work in parts and it amazes me the things people think they can fix when they know nothing about what they're working on!!

My 04 manual recommends 5k, they don’t differentiate between regular oil and synth blend. I’m running 5/20 Motorcraft synth blend (Ford recommend) in it and I plan on sending a sample to Blackstone for analysis when I get about 3k on the oil to see how it's doing. I ran 5/30 Valvoline in my 99 and would go as much as 4k miles on it. It was always good and clean even with 185k on the engine.

You could buy a damn Cavalier with LESS miles for 4k!

I have almost 90k on my truck and have changed my oil probably 9 or 10 times. Granted I run synthetic but I'm pretty lazy for a mechanic.
