Opinions of parents (and others): was i out of line? talking to child issue
lets be nice guys, dont want this thread getting closed down!
So last night i was sitting at in n out (fast food joint) with my girlfriend.
and in this place the benches are basically back to back but ONE piece so if someone moves behind me i can feel it shaking.
now, story time. there was a girl about maybe 10 years old, obese with her mother and 2 other adult males (dad and uncle maybe?) the males left the table for a long time , i think waiting for their food (about 10 mins) at which point the child kept constantly MOVING, laying down, sitting up, turning around which in turn shakes the bench that i am sitting on (because again they are connected) i put up with it anf then all of the sudden im FED UP, i turn around (the mother across from the child) and i say excuse me, can you sit still? thank you
the child stops moving for the most part but about 2 mins later the mother moves the child on the other side. and here i see my gf looking angry, she says i should have said something to the mother and not the child BUT i say that a child is more likely to understand their surroundings better if a stranger tells them whats up and i believe she was old enough to understand. i see my gfs point but i dont agree with it.
opinions everyone? and moving was not an option.
PLEASE NOTE IF YOU ARE A PARENT YOURSELF and pretend the kid was yours

I think you were right on the money with what you did. The mother more than likely would have just told you off. The little girl was old enough to understand that she was disturbing you and now maybe she has learned to be more careful.
I tell little kids if they are doing something that they shouldn't all the time. Seeing as their parents will just ignore me.

I think you did the right thing and I agree with you... If the mother told the child to stop, it depends on if the child respect their mothers rules.. But if a random stranger tells them to stop... you best believe they would.

Re: Opinions of parents (and others): was i out of line? talking to child issue
If you were fed up with it, it should have been said to the mother. That way its done like an adult and maybe you can make the mother realize she isnt doing her job. Some parents see that you said something to their kid, and the parent saying ooohhh you got yelled at. Sounds like they are one of those parents that want other people to deal with their kids so they dont have to be bothered. Like the town I work in, alot of people have trouble with their kids and call the police to reprimand them. I have told them many times myself that we arent here to raise their kids.

ive almost done the same thing many of times. Some parents just let their kids run wild and it drives me nuts.

I would say in front of the child. That way the child hears it from you, then they can see how the parent delivers the message and they also can hopefully realize that isnt the way they behave

BUT then again, if you yell it loud enough for the restaurant to hear, then not only will the child be embarrassed, the mother will be as well because everybody looking will be wondering why the mother isn't reprimanding her own child.
