Default Suspect in coffee shop police slayings shot dead

I had a feeling he would be killed, I'm glad to hear that he was taken care of.

From: http://www.latimes.com/news/nation-a...,7940378.story

There's also a video of a press conference on the URL.

Quote:
Reporting from Seattle - The wounded fugitive who police said gunned down four Seattle-area officers was shot and killed by a Seattle patrol officer early today after he was found near a broken-down vehicle on the side of the road.

Police said Maurice Clemmons was shot at about 2:45 a.m. when a seven-year veteran of the Seattle force on routine patrol stopped to investigate the vehicle, which had been reported stolen.

The officer, near the car, which was standing idle with its hood up, detected some movement behind him. "He recognized the person who was approaching him to be . . . the person that has been broadcast as the possible suspect in the tragic homicide in Lakewood," assistant Seattle Police Chief Jim Pugel told reporters.

The officer ordered Clemmons to stop and show his hands. Instead, Clemmons began running counterclockwise around the disabled vehicle, and the officer fired several rounds at him, killing him.

It was then confirmed that Clemmons had suffered a serious gunshot wound to the stomach. The search for Clemmons had led investigators on an odyssey around Seattle since Sunday morning's shootings in a Parkland coffee shop, where four Lakewood Police Department officers were shot over their morning coffee.

"I just want to thank all my brothers and sisters in law enforcement for the hours and hours of tireless work since this tragedy happened," Lakewood Police Chief Bret Farrar said. "I knew that they would bring this to a resolution -- they would find this person."

The Pierce County Sheriff's Department, which had led the investigation of the shooting in unincorporated Parkland, said a suspected getaway driver had been arrested, and officers also had taken into custody three people accused of aiding Clemmons during his two days on the run.

Pierce County sheriff's spokesman Ed Troyer said an additional six to seven arrests could be made later today of people accused of providing Clemmons with a variety of assistance.

"Some are friends, some are acquaintances, some are partners in crime, some are relatives," he said. "Now they're all partners in crime."

"We're very lucky we don't have a dead police officer from Seattle," Troyer said. "This could have very easily turned out totally different."

Those accused of aiding the fugitive so far have been identified as Eddie Lee Davis, Douglas Edward Davis and Rickey Hinton. Troyer also said Clemmons' sister was believed to have driven her brother to Seattle and bandaged his wound.

Police began a series of major operations Sunday night, surrounding homes of Clemmons' friends and relatives in an attempt to identify those who were helping him and prevent him from finding additional shelter.

The 37-year-old landscaper from Tacoma appeared to have moved around the Seattle area since the Sunday morning incident, when he entered a strip mall coffee shop, walked up to the counter as if to order coffee, then turned and opened fire on the four police officers working on their laptops before their shift.

One of the officers managed to struggle with Clemmons as he made his way to the door and shot him in the stomach before being killed himself.

Clemmons was found in possession of one of the officer's guns.

The slain officers were identified as Sgt. Mark Renninger, 39, and Officers Ronald Owens, 37; Tina Griswold, 40; and Greg Richards, 42. All had been members of the force since it started five years ago.

Clemmons had a history of violent crimes in Arkansas and Washington dating back to his teenage years.

He would have been serving a 108-year prison term in Arkansas, but his sentence was commuted by former Gov. Mike Huckabee in 2000 after Clemmons argued that he had committed his crimes -- including burglary, aggravated robbery and illegal possession of a firearm -- as a youth and had changed.

In his petition to Huckabee, Clemmons said he came "from a very good Christian family" and "was raised much better than my actions speak."

A year after his pardon, Clemmons was back in prison on a parole violation. He was granted parole again in 2004. "Said when he left the first time he was not ready," one parole reviewer wrote in his notes on the case. "Doesn't want to die in prison . . . will try to do right thing."

Clemmons moved to Washington state after his release, but, family members told police, he began acting erratically and appeared to have lost some of his mental abilities.

Austin Raihl, whose family lived near the shooting suspect, said his mother was driving down the street last spring when Clemmons inexplicably picked up a landscape brick and hurled it through the window of her car.

She called her brother-in-law, and Clemmons and another man who was with him threw bricks and rocks and broke two of his windows, Raihl said.

"The cops finally showed up and hauled them off to jail, and they got bailed out like two weeks after that," Raihl said. "They said he was on drugs, and it took four police officers to take him down."

According to police reports, Clemmons punched one of the arresting sheriff's deputies in the face.

In May, he was charged with second-degree rape after a bizarre night in which Clemmons allegedly forced his wife and her daughter to undress and told them repeatedly to trust him, "that he was Jesus," police said in a court affidavit.

Clemmons' sister, Latanya Clemmons, told officers investigating the case that her brother -- who was released last week on $15,000 bond -- had undergone a change.

"Latanya," the sheriff's department report said, "stated that Maurice is not in his right mind."

I was hoping they would first pepper spray him. Then taze him (a few times). Then shoot him.

I'm Jesse Jackson is on his way there now to chastise the police and defend this poor misunderstood man that was abused and murdered by the po-leece.

That area is home for me, and those where some great people he killed that have some families that are now doing with out. My heart goes out to the families, friends, and fellow officers of those in the shooting.

And good riddance to that dumb SOB. He got what he deserved.

And Jesse Jackson is an idiot!

Yeh... it's been all over everywhere here.... we've had 5 cops shot and killed in the last month and another shot and injured. Both suspects ended up being shot (the other one is paralyzed now I think? His family is pissed...)... I'm glad it's over but with all that plus the fact a bunch of cop cars were lit on fire I have a feeling this won't be the end of it...

Yeah... not once but twice! Apparently they were mislead about where he was and SWAT camped out in front of 2 different houses, one each night. One was his and one was a family members from my understanding... either way I think everyone who mislead police should be sent to court and they should have to pay the SWAT team bill... I know they have a couple people under arrest for helping him hide...

I believe all family members who mislead the investigators and aided in the hiding of the guy have been brought in and charges will be filed. At least that's what I hear on the news.

The family should be up for the murder charges to if you want my opinion. Now they are saying that he had a court ordered psych evaluation in October that labeled him a "threat to society" but they didn't have enough to force him to be committed to the psych ward!

He should never have been let out of jail but our Governor is a genius and created a loophole...

It wasn't in Washington he served jail time and go pardoned, we aren't that dumb. It was in Arkansas or something like that.

Huckabee...but he shouldn't be blamed for it. This is one case out of the thousands he sees pass his desk which most get rejected. This one was different....He listened to his advisers and the judges that were on the suspects case/trial/whatever. Took their professional insight, and made a judgement call based on their insight. It's all an unfortunate series of events.
