BMW makes a GREAT motorcycle. But experience determines alot to.
My aunt's boyfriend has a K1200 BMW and a 56 BMW, that 1200 he rides pretty much year round up your way in west bend, the 56 rarely comes out, but both are awesome machines

in that case i would go with the Ninja 250r, or maybe if youre experianced go with the Ninja 650r

take in mind, those two are Sport bikes, not Super Sports, theyre fast, fun, easy to handle, but they arent gonna top out around 180 mph like a stock Gixxer 1k does, and they'll take corners alot softer than a CBR could ever take one, if youre gonna be hauling your gf around alot, id go with the 650r just because they have a larger passenger cushion compared to any other sports bike.

Look at late 90s Hoda VFR750s. They were rated the best bike made for years. they dont do anything the best , I.E. not the fastest ,most comy best handling, but do eveything well. You can still get a well cared for model for under 4k. I had a 96 and used it for a sport bike and a tourer.

If you want to go Italian look for a Aprila Futura. Much more rare, a bit tempermaental, but it out VFRs the VFR. (My current bike)[

I know a few guys that traded harleys for BMWs and never looked back. I dont blame them neither.

The XR1200 is sweet looking. What I would like to see is the Vrod engine in a Harley Touring Frame.

If you are going to be riding for any type of distance or if you are taking the girlfriend for rides then a supersport may not be your best choice.

If you like the sporbike style then i would look into the sport touring options such as the,
Yamaha Fz6R
Kawasaki ninja 650R
Suzuki Sv650

With a bike like this you will still get the sporty look as well as comfort closer to a cruiser... also it will be a much more comfortable (and safe feeling) ride for your GF as well as a more forgivable bike for new riders
I have talked to many guys while out on rides that are on supersports like the CBR600rr, Ninja Zx6R, R6, GSXR etc... and they say they have a tough time riding for more than an hour (some even less) not to say it cant be done but it is a lot less enjoyable because of he aggressive riding position

Id say x2 on the supermoto bikes, drz400, i have one to cruise on and its pretty sweet, you can pick them up really cheap too.

as far as helmets DONT go cheap stick with a shoei, arai, or agv not something to mess with when it comes to that kind of stuff.

Zamp makes good helmets and they are cheap as hell. like you can get a full faced helmet for under $50 and they are DOT and snell approved.

I'd say Dual Sport, they are so fun, light on the street and fun on fire roads, gravel roads, and some off road stuff, best of both worlds.

KLR650, DR650, XR650L, are all priced well. If you want a really comfortable Sport Touring bike, go with a Yamaha FZ1.

Like was said, don't skimp on a helmet or good riding gear. My son just hit a deer last week, the helmet saved his life, but all he had on was jeans, T shirt and gloves . He was doing 55 - 60 mph. He has a broken bone in his left hand and road rash all over.

From the local news paper.

Lincoln County, MO — A Wright City man was left with minor injuries after the motorcycle he was riding struck a deer Wednesday evening in Lincoln County.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the accident happened at 6:25 p.m. on Route J, 0.2 of a mile south of Big Creek.
Anthony Brohammer, 18, was riding a 1992 Honda motorcycle south when the vehicle struck a deer. Brohammer, who was wearing a helmet, was ejected from the vehicle.
Brohammer was taken by ambulance to St. Joseph West Hospital

Just cause its dot approved doesnt mean its good, how much is your head worth? Helmets arent cheapa good ones gonna be $300-600 and a good rule of thumb is if u hit your head and get a concussion its done, so sketch seeing guys wear the same helmet after getting wadded up. Not good!
