Default Electric Vehicles.....

Well today was interesting. On my way home, I decided to stop at my uncle's house for a few minutes in which I did. Then I decided to stop by a local convient store and get a cold soda after I finished getting my MRI. Someone rolled into the place with a brand new Nissian leaf. I got a really good look at it and it seems like it's a little bit on the small side. But I've also seen alot more publicity concerning electric vehicles these days. I'm doing some research to find out more about them. But I also wanted to get you guys thoughts in general concerning electric vehicles. So far the only electric motor I'm interested in is the series wound D.C. electric motor. If I find any articles, I'll post the links up for you guys.

I found a link that might interest you guys.

Well I've been attending SEVA (Seattle electric vehicle association) meetings for about a year now, maybe a little less than a year. Personally I love where they're going with EVs. I don't think they're going to full on replace internal combustion vehicles anytime soon, obviously, but theres definitely been some big steps towards making EVs more realistic, especially around western Washington. Charging stations are being put in all over the place and if I remember right they're planning on putting charging stations along the whole I-5 corridor.

I have a friend (he got me going to the SEVA meetings) who is in the process of converting a BMW Z3 to electric right now. He's hoping to get about a 100 mile range from it, so lots of $$$ are being spent But I cant wait til it's finished! it'll be awesome to race his stock Z4 and the electric Z3

Kool man. That's what I was looking for. I've been interested in EV's for quite some time now, especially after the release of the new Chevy Volt hybrid. I've got an old "Street Rodder" magazine here with a really good article about EV's and lots of info concerning EV's. I think it might be high time to re consider EV's because of our energy situation and the price of foreign oil. It might be a suitable alternative, but you're right about it not replacing the I.C.E anytime soon.

i dont think think the electric vehicle will replace the internal combustion engine. the battery technology we currently have just doesn't offer much range. on a side note, i saw honda now makes a civic that runs on natural gas. i think thats pretty cool.

Ya, I mean I don't know a ton about it, but I agree that the technology we have right now isn't going to allow for a replacement of I.C.E vehicles. But things like the Volt and the Leaf are positive steps forward. As long as advancements keep being made we will eventually see big progess.

I see Leafs around here ALL the time, like they're literally all over the place. I wouldn't drive one, personally, just because of the looks and it wouldn't suit my needs. But if someone that lives in the city, downtown seattle for example, needs a vehicle but they only need to go a few miles everyday, then an EV would be great for them!

As awesome as electric vehicles may be, I still don't think theres gonna be a subsitution for getting down and dirty with internal combustion engines.

i think they're awesome for people like my dad, who work about a mile from home, and on a day to day basis doesn't go farther than 10 miles from home/work. most of the time he walks to work unless he has something to carry in with him, otherwise he drives.

since we live on a UC with a bunch of engineering type, there have been a bunch of EVs around. my neighbor did a trial of the Toyota eCom (i think that was what it was called) a few years back, maintenance crews use electric cars including golf carts, GEMs, Ford Think, some little mini van things, small payload trucks, Toyota Rav4, and Ford Rangers.

For these two situations, they're fantastic. no need to travel far, there are charging stations all around campus. way better than the continuous stopping/starting of the engine, decreased maintenance costs to the university who would have fluids to replace and other wear items on a gas engine.

that being said, at the school i go to we had an engineering fair last year that had 2 Tesla roadsters, electric dirt and street bikes, other mini electric vehicles mentioned above (the van and truck) that our school uses for it's grounds keeping/maintenance staff, and seminars on the technology. it's come a long way since GM's EV1 and seems to be getting better.

That Street Rodder magazine article I read covered issues like range and power and it was very interesting. Ken Koch also contributed the article and he's been doing EV's since the energy crisis of 1974. He also mentioned the benefits as well as the problems of EV's. The biggest problem was range and battery technology. Lithium Ion batteries aint cheap by any means at all. That's where I feel that hybrids and EV's are being held back. It's the cost of the batteries needed to power these vehicles. That might change however due to GM's new hybrid/EV battery plant. And Ford announced wednesday that it won't be giving pay raises out but they're going to give out bonuses and retirment benefits instead. They also announced that they are looking to invest in some new hybrid/battery technology as well.
