Either one will work.

The Ranger has a proven design. They are reliable trucks with a strong following. You can't go wrong with one. You may want to consider the 2.3 I4 engine though. It's reliable and has plenty of power in a basic 2WD truck.

The Colorado isn't a bad truck, but I don't consider them to be quite as good as the Ranger. The sheetmetal seems thin, some of the I5 engines have had cylinder head problems, and the build quality isn't that great. The Ranger outsells the Colorado, even with a much older design.

I wouldn't necessarily say the Tacoma is a better choice. It has a newer design than the Ranger, but that's not all good. The beds are made of a composite material that sometimes cracks in cold climates, and I have heard of some having transmission problems and other issues. Tacomas can be expensive as well.

I will never own another GM that isnt a v8...Everything else they make is a POS. Especially Pontiac...Never seen a pontiac that wasnt a POS except a couple trans ams...That was a little off topic...but my point is,
Ford > GM

You are going to pay more money for the Colorado and it is built with cheaper materials. Go with the Ranger, they are bullet proof little trucks.

Ranger or Colorado?? Ranger all the way! Yeah, it's tiny - but they don't come any tougher.

ranger, for sure... wouldn't dare touch a compact GM truck right now as these colorado's and canyon's seem to be a step down from the some-what bullet-proof S10's and sonoma's...ford all the way and any compact nissan or toyota truck would be thousands and thousands more than a ranger...

I just bought a brand new 2011 Ford Ranger Sport with 17 kms (I put 10 kms on it test driving it) 4.0 L, 5speed, pw, pdl. The dealership gave me $1000.00 for my '98 Ford Contour, with incentives and taxes it came to $18984.00, I wrote them a cheque for $18000.00 and they jumped at it. A similarly equipped chevy canyon/gmc colorado would have cost me right around $26000.00. The Ranger has been around since 1983 and has stood the test of time. This is my second Ranger and I plan on keeping it for at least a dozen years.

2001 ranger edge here, bought new by my dad given to me. Been through HELL, and back, with never a huge problem needing fixed. Honestly, the only time it had to be shopped is for a wreck. Its been in four of them and you honestly couldnt even tell. They werent all that serious except the one though.

And my family and i are pretty mechanically inclined, so consider that, but this thing has never had an engine problem so bad that it needed to be worked on in the shop, we have done everything ourselves. I think the biggest thing thats gone out after 10 years is the ball joints. Only one was so bad it NEEDED replaced, the others could use it. I think that was the hardest thing ive had to do in the whole 10 years.
